Excessive fluid in the liver bowl can indicate that the liver is bleeding heavily or that the ascites pump is not operating normally
Firstly, check the liver for any excessive bleeding. The ascites pump is able to return 180ml per minute to the reservoir, any further volume will build up inside the bowl. Ensure haemostasis as far as possible.
If the liver is not bleeding heavily, check that the level sensor is operational.
If necessary, re-wet the tubing in the level sensor and ensure that it is correctly fitted (black tape either side of sensor).
Ensure that there is no air-lock or kinking of the tubing underneath the liver bowl. If there is, squeeze the tubing with your fingers to encourage the air/kink to leave.
Open ascites pump and ensure tubing is correctly fitted.
DO NOT put fingers inside the pump while the device is operational. If the tubing needs re-fitting, remove the level sensor tubing first to ensure that pump does not activate.
