During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Kunchacko made significant contributions to Malayalam cinema, both as a producer and as director of some notable movies. Other than RDX, 2018 and Romancham, there has been nothing of note this year, worrying filmmakers about the commercial viability of their projects.

Over the past few months, top Malayalam stars such as Mohanlal have attempted historical action films such as Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham that failed to draw audiences to theatres. This Jude Anthany directorial was India's official entry to the Oscars this year and was among the best films to release in Malayalam in 2023.
