May Events
PTO Educational Enrichment: On May 3rd, a naturalist visited from The Great Swamp and brought a variety of live creatures to see up close and even touch! We got to see a millipede, box turtle, and a corn snake!
Field Trip: On May 16th, the Second Graders, visited the Reeves-Reed Arboretum. They learned about what makes this site an a arboretum and how it is home to many creatures not just trees. They also discovered the essential components of every habitat and found out what happens when any of those components are missing or altered. Through games and activities, students explore the concepts of fluctuating wildlife populations and carrying capacity. A planting project was included and students brought home a sunflower seed in a pot.
Jaguar Buddies: The Second Graders met with their Fifth Grade jaguar buddies from Mrs. Niper's class and Ms. Kennedy's class again on May 24. We reviewed rules for playing games such as being "The Good Winner" vs. "The Sore Loser" and then played many board games like Sorry, Headbands, or Uno, in small groups.
Game Show Assembly
Garden Lesson: The last week of May, second graders had a garden lesson. Students learned about insect homes. This correlated with our science units and field trip! In the learning garden, students listened to a book about how insects build their homes, then had the opportunity to assist in building an insect hotel! Students also planted flowers to bring home. These are in compostable containers which can be planted right in the ground. Please don’t over water and let the plants get plenty of sunlight!
Reading and Writing
This month, students read about and researched information about a National Park. First, they were given three sources to read and take notes (text, website, book). They took notes on the location, size, animals, land and water features, things to do and fun facts. They compared their information from the different sources. After that, students organized their information into paragraphs or lists. Each had to have a heading and main idea. Lastly, students published their paragraphs and lists by typing them into slides for a presentation. They had fun customizing each slide with pictures, font style and color and backgrounds. I hope you enjoyed viewing the presentation! This work was outstanding and I am so proud of their hard work!
While students were publishing their National Park Research presentations in writing, in reading, students chose one of the fifty states and researched information about their state, using multiple sources. Then students created a state poster and they are on display in the hallway.
We had a grammar lesson on contractions. Students received a sundae bowl, and went to the "scoop shop" (at the back table) to pick the two words that made their contraction and wrote a sentence using it.
Math
Mathematicians learned all about shapes! First, students learned about lines and surfaces. Lines can be straight or curved and surfaces are flat or curved. If a solid shape has a flat surface it can be stacked or slid, and if a solid shape has a curved surface it can be rolled. Next, students dove deeper into flat shapes. They identified and recognized flat shapes, divided shapes into equal parts such as halves, third and fourths, combined flat shapes to make figures and used dot paper and grid paper to draw flat shapes. Lastly, students learned about solid shapes. They recognized and identified solid shapes, made models using solid shapes and identified and counted faces of solid shapes. The students favorite part of this unit was learning how to draw a cube!
Science and Social Studies
In this final Science lesson, students read about ocean habitats. Afterward, we compared the diversity of life in the ocean habitat by gathering data, synthesizing information, and reporting our findings. Students learned about the plants and the animals that live in the ocean and the characteristics of the ocean.
Next, we returned to Social Studies and discovered four big problems from the past. Students learned how one person can make a difference. We looked closely at four courageous leaders who took action to help their communities.
Reading- Readers will draw on previously learned strategies, and develop new ones, to integrate what they know about a character (or characters) across a series. Children will use this information to understand, predict, and
critique a story.
Writing - Writers will write a persuasive book review while keeping specific elements in mind. We will even turn all of our book reviews into a website.
Math - Our last math unit is graphing! Students will learn about picture and bar graphs and line plots. Students will collect and organize data and create their own graph.
Social Studies - Our class will learn about six different countries and their immigrant population’s history in the United States.
