BIA = Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
Sends a small electrical current through the body (hand to foot, foot to hand).
Measures five compartments: body fat, muscle mass, minerals, protein, total body water.
Important: No device gives a 100% direct body composition measure — it's a scientific estimation.
Evolt accuracy relies on five factors:
Weight
Height
Age
Gender
Impedance (resistance against the machine)
Safe to scan: Pregnant women, pacemakers, cochlear implants — but always ask for medical clearance.
Body implants (e.g. breast implants, hip/knee replacements): fine to scan, but may slightly increase fat reading (300–500g).
Machine offline? Use Manual Scan option.

(Use this to explain to members 2-3 days before their scan!)
Same time of day for each scan (within 1 hour window).
Best practice: Morning + fasted.
No exercise before scanning (pumps muscle size, falsely increases lean mass).
Fast 3–4 hours before scan (otherwise food/water can skew readings).
Stay hydrated the day before (aim for 2-3L water).
Drink ~500ml water about 1 hour before scan.
Keep food intake the same the day before.
Sleep well (sleep quality affects fluid retention).
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, pre-workout supplements 24–48 hours before.
Females: Try to scan around Day 7–8 of menstrual cycle (lowest estrogen, most stable results).
Carb intake affects lean mass reading:
Low carbs = lower lean mass.
High carbs = higher lean mass.
Supplements:
Creatine: increases intracellular water → shows higher lean mass, lower fat %.
Caffeine: dehydrates → can artificially increase body fat %.
Medications: If they have changed medication since last scan, it can affect total body water.
Bio Wellness Index (BWI): Evolt’s replacement for BMI – healthier, more accurate.
Total Body Water (TBW):
Goal = 70% water.
65% intracellular / 35% extracellular is the healthy balance.
Increase in TBW: Check carb intake, creatine, menstrual cycle.
Decrease in TBW: Check dehydration, caffeine, alcohol intake.
Intracellular Fluid (ICF) (inside cells):
If ICF too high (>65%) = hydration issue (overhydrated or dehydrated).
Always ask: Water intake? Caffeine? Alcohol? Carb intake? Menstrual cycle? Medication changes?
Extracellular Fluid (ECF) (outside cells):
If ECF too high (>35%) = inflammation issue.
Ask about: Recent training, DOMS, injuries, new medications, menstrual cycle, arthritis.
Fat Mass:
Subcutaneous fat = fat under the skin (what you can see).
Visceral fat = internal fat around organs (can't see).
Visceral Fat Area:
Example: 52cm² area = 52cm x 52cm pizza box, 1cm thick.
Visceral Fat Level Ranges:
1–4 = Optimal
5–9 = Balanced
9+ = Risk zone (heart disease, diabetes).
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate):
Calories burned at complete rest — "keeping the lights on."
Biological Age:
Based on skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, fat mass.
Segmental Analysis:
Measures muscle & fat distribution per body part.
If unbalanced, opportunity to discuss injury prevention & personalised programs.
Goal setting based on scan:
Muscle gain = Calorie surplus.
Fat loss = Calorie deficit.
Better health/maintenance = Maintenance calories.
Supplements:
Always recommend consulting a health professional before starting.
Supplements support a good diet — they don't replace it.
Negative Result?
Check TBW, ICF/ECF.
If consistent → real result.
Ask: What habits/behaviours supported or hurt progress?
Set small, realistic next steps (nutrition, training, sleep, hydration).
If results look unrealistically positive or negative:
Check hydration and scan conditions first.
Reschedule the scan in 1–2 days if needed.
Empower the client:
Always educate: not just "good" or "bad" results — explain what they mean!
Encourage reflection: "What went well? What could improve?"
Ask after the scan: "Would you like to optimise your body composition score?" "How would you feel achieving [insert goal]?"
Then offer:
Personal training
Group classes
Nutrition support
Always double-check water balance before celebrating or worrying about results.
Remember: Body scans track progress, not perfection — educate and empower!
