The International Social Studies Association will hold its first in-person annual meeting in Kobe, Japan, on October 23 (Friday), 2026. Building on the momentum of our previous online annual meetings, this gathering will bring together social studies scholars from across Asia and around the world to share ideas, build connections, and engage in meaningful dialogue about social studies education within and beyond national contexts. We warmly invite researchers and educators who are passionate about these conversations to join us in Kobe. Please save the date!

Invitation for Proposals
Citizenship Education in Asia
The International Social Studies Association invites scholars, teachers, graduate students, and educational practitioners to submit proposals for the 2026 ISSA Annual Meeting, themed Citizenship Education in Asia.
This year’s meeting seeks to explore how citizenship education is conceptualized, practiced, and challenged across diverse Asian contexts. We welcome proposals that engage with issues such as democracy, diversity, difficult histories, peace and human rights education, digital citizenship, migration, nationalism, global citizenship, civic participation, and social transformation in formal and informal educational settings.

Abstract (500 words maximum)
All proposals will undergo blind review. Please do not include names or institutional affiliations in the proposal document.

Alignment with the conference theme
Relevance to citizenship and social studies education
Clarity of purpose and theoretical framework
Research design and methodology (if applicable)
Contribution to the field
Organization and overall quality of writing

Proposals are due 11:59 p.m. (Japan Standard Time), Tuesday, June 30, 2026. No submissions will be accepted after the deadline.
We warmly encourage submissions from scholars and practitioners across Asia and beyond, and especially welcome interdisciplinary, comparative, and collaborative work.
