For centuries women have been put into this box of what they're supposed to be
and how they're supposed to act.
For years we’ve been kicking and trying to break out.
Sometimes we crack the box and are able to breath without the feeling of suffocation
but it’s never enough.
It will never be enough until that box is shattered
nothing more than forgotten shards on the ground
that can never be resurrected
But I guess we are meant to be trapped and looked at for the male gaze
for not even statues of women can escape this fate.
As I’m staring at this statue I wonder if Richard McDermott Miller,
her creator,
Would be angry at me for being angry
To be fair at the time that this statue was created women were like art pieces
not in the looking like masterpieces way
but in the way that art is meant to be viewed for people's pleasure
And meant to be silent and never speak a word.
At least he was kind enough to give her a name: Sandy.
Though he gave Sandy a name he wasn’t kind enough to give her clothes
keeping her exposed to anybody that walks by her
She has no privacy
And no voice
Sandy will never escape
Just like women
Who will never escape this box.
