Thank you for your interest in the REU. This program is funded by the RTG grant of the UVa mathematics geometry and topology group. The primary organizer is Thomas Koberda. For questions, please email thomas.koberda@virginia.edu. Apply here by February 15, 2024.
Due to the expiration of the RTG grant which funded this REU, there will be no REU in 2025. Please check back later.
The 2024 UVa Topology REU is an in-person research experience of undergraduates, held in Charlottesville, VA and sponsored by the UVa Mathematics Geometry and Topology group's RTG grant. Participants will conduct research in groups of 3-4 under the supervision of postdoctoral scholars, on a variety of topics in geometric and algebraic topology. A number of enrichment and career development opportunities will also be provided.
This 8 week long program will run from June 3 until July 26, 2024, includes room and board, and provides a generous living stipend. Preference will be given to applicants from local and regional schools and to those who have not had research opportunities in the past, though all applications are welcome. US citizenship or permanent residence is required.
Applicants must submit a transcript, CV, personal statement (research statement on mathprograms), and two letters of recommendation.

FAQ
Q: How much is the stipend? A: This will be determined closer to the time offers are made, and will probably be between $5000 and $6000.
Q: What is the desired background? A: We are looking for students with some experience in abstract, proof-based mathematics, including some abstract algebra, real analysis, and ideally some topology.
Q: Can I apply if I am not a US citizen or permanent resident? What if I have my own funding? A: We will not be able to consider any applicants who are not US citizens or permanent residents.
Q: I have other commitments during the summer. Can I start later/leave early/do part of the program remotely? A: Participants are required to be present in person for the full duration of the program.
Q: I've graduated already. Can I participate? A: Participants must be enrolled undergraduates at the time of the program.
