of the Summer School 2021 - Östersund

The five group projects were all exciting, motivating and inspiring, engaging students in the topic of sustainability from the start! One project measured air quality for fine dust and another looked into possible sources of pollution in the nearby lake. One project set about to improve a transport app . Another group looked into the fashion industry and sustanability in recycling garments. And last but not least, one group developed a game to raise awareness of the importance of forests.

In this project we have tried to define a concept that revolves around sustainable design and the textile industry. The aim is to create, idealize a garment, which can be manufactured in a sustainable way and which can be reused and recycled, to give it a second life.

For our project, we will be researching the air quality in Östersund. We will do this by doing several measurements throughout the city to see which parts are polluted and how much. After we have gotten all the data we will present our data on a map for people to view and interact with. So that they can get more inside into how polluted some of these areas are.

Deforestation of natural forests is becoming more and more of a problem in Sweden, and actually this is also a big problem across the rest of the world. Our goal is to raise awareness. To reach that goal we developed a game that is easy to learn and even kind of easy to reproduce. By that you can make it accessible for a lot of people.

The project objectives were to assess possible uses of the app, identify strengths and weaknesses and provide suggestions on improvement where necessary. This was achieved by using multiple different test cases, collecting and analyzing data. The results indicated that the app could be a useful tool in achieving the sustainability goals, however multiple feature, function and UI/UX challenges would have to be solved.

During this project we investigated a probable source of pollution that could influence the Lillsjön lake near Östersund. The objective of our project is that we want to clarify if the water is polluted by the snow pile and which other sources of pollution there might be.
