There have also been some damage to the playground equipment (funded by projects made by the Friends of Surrey Square Park) that have been ruined and needed replacement. This area has been subject to dog damage for long time and in the past years tree saplings have been debarked too.
This swing seat was repeatedly damaged, the hanging ropes chewed, and replacement was contingent to funds been raised. May 2020.
31 March 2023 Playground Fire
Sadly, some more vandalism has been affecting our beloved park.
Last night approximately around midnight some miscreant did fly-tip in the centre of the playground area.
Being a windy and damp night not many people were around, and the perpetrator found it easy to carry what probably were at least a couple of black bags of cactaceous material plus some cushion there, unchallenged.
Not content with throwing the rubbish in a public place, the pile was then set on fire.
The strong wind fanned the flame and ambers spread all around.
Much of the playground equipment could have been seriously damaged but for the rain that eventually, after some house, managed to extinguish the smouldering bonfire.
The weather in this case helped to prevent the fire to go elsewhere (some local residents also alerted by the glow came and assessed the seriousness of the situation and helped to contain it) but still it is heartbreaking to see how insensitive and irresponsible malefactors are prepared to burn down a place created for the benefit of the community and their effort to make our area a better place for everybody.
