Their plan was to take a CAD drawing, import it into SketchUp, and transform it into a 3D version of what their design will look like. Is that possible? If so, any advice on the best way to go about this? Is there a specific file type we need in order to import into SketchUp? How long would projects like this take to complete for someone still learning the program? etc.

Sure you can. I just did such a model for a colleague who just draws 2D in the same software package I use, but eventually .dwg files get the linework into SketchUp. Quick and dirty, you can extrude a typical cabinet cross section in seconds, but you probably need real cabinets with detail. I suggest checking out the Kraft Maid dynamic components in 3D Warehouse as an example of what can be done with dynamic components. Open the options dialog, and you can choose cabinet size and options. Interact with them and you can open doors and pull out drawers.

I recently watched the movie "The Founder" and was really interested in how Ray Kroc saw what McDonalds could be and what it would eventually become. I was particularly interested in the part where the McDonald brothers go through various iterations of designing the kitchen. A kitchen design that would be the same in every restaurant, a kitchen that would make billions of hamburgers all around the world - efficiently. I really liked the way they iterated the design of the kitchen. The movie went through the McDonald brothers getting all of their workers together on a tennis court and mapping out a proposed kitchen design with chalk.

Once the kitchen design was drawn on the tennis court, the workers then went to their positions and carried out the tasks they would perform when in the real kitchen. This would be similar to Usability testing of a proposed design.

So - what did the brothers McDonald do. They rubbed out the previous chalk marks and tried a 2nd version. They drew up the 2nd iteration of the kitchen design, put the workers in place and tried again. Some of the positions worked but being the perfectionists they were the McDonald brothers were not entirely happy - it could be better. The 2nd version of the kitchen is shown below (also from movie "The Founder").

Finally, after many iterations they came up with a foolproof and super super efficient design. What I also like about this is that they designed this prior to actually being in a kitchen, in real cooking conditions with customers coming up to the window asking for hamburgers. Designing under these kinds of conditions would not be great. It would be stressful and definitely would not lead to end customer satisfaction. Ultimately, the McDonald designed kitchen together with the "Speedee Service System" would revolutionise the way modern restaurants would serve food to customers all around the globe. Amazing!

The time the brothers took to design the kitchen in this manner ultimately saved time and huge amounts of money and the design was so great they used this as the standard in all of the McDonald's restaurants. This is what a good design allows you to do. Now, more than ever I believe that proper time needs to be spent on design - especially with new technologies and new methodologies being utilised. The McDonald brothers did not have a name for the method they went through to design the kitchen but they were focused on a design mindset - it was solution focused and action oriented towards creating a preferred future. While only a small part of the film, it was great to see Design Thinking in action!

I just installed the new version. I'm also fairly new to 20/20. I have several designs saved but when I want to open them I get a popup window that says the file is unable to load. Is this a 20 20 issue or a system error.?

1) If they were done in Version 8.1 Catalog Tools (8.1.4530), this was never meant to be a full version of design. It was meant only for testing catalogs. So unfortunately these designs cannot be brought into any other design version. You'll have to keep using them in 8.1.4530.

2) If they were done in V10, is it possible that you just installed the new version from an 'old' disc? V10 is not backward compatible. I'm wondering if these several designs were done on a newer version of 10, while your recent installation was of an 'older' version of 10. The most current version is 10.3.1.38. If you click on File > Help > About 20-20 Design you'll see what version you're currently running. Anything less than 10.3.1.38 and you should consider visiting 2020.net to get the latest version.

Thanks for the information. I installed from the newest version 10.3.0.31 and have not had any other versions on my computer before. It's also a brand new laptop running Windows 7. The program is also freezing up and crashing which is happening to another colleague of mine who installed the same version.

Is there a way I can make a template of my room layout and dimensions, and then just keep copying and pasting it when I want to move it to a new design version? Or, do I have to start all over every time with inputting all of the dimensions for everything? I haven't been able to figure this out or find any reference anywhere to how to do it.

I do a lot of domestic house extension design, more and more clients want new kitchens and often either go to the suppliers to get a nice swanky 3d visual, or they go on the IKEA website for instance and do it themselves!

I've been exploring the Vectorworks kitchen capabilities today but not got as well as expected and wondered if someone who is an expert at using VW for this Stumbling blocks so far are, a) I could only find one domestic sink in the VW library, and as it can't be converted to a plug-in object I can't customise it, and b) I don't see how to insert it into the worktop. You tube video welcome!

Thanks for your replies, I've had a quick look at Interiorcad, the examples are ok but not amazing, but it's the price that surprised me, it's the same as buying Vectorworks! and it needs VW 10 or 11, even the very basic version is expensive.

did you check out interior xs - This is the basic version without any support for manufacturing but with all other capabilities of interiorcad. It's available for Vectorworks 2010 & Vectorworks 2011 at 299? (about $430, depending on the exchange rate).

1. You cannot change the texture mapping on the Cabinet PIO: to help with this I've been creating two duplicate RW textures for the wood cabinets, one of which is rotated 90 degrees. That way I can control whether I want a horizontal or vertical grain just by switching that part to a different number 'Style' class.

3. If you can't get exactly what you want with the Cabinet PIO, get it close enough, switch to 'Top View' and then ungroup it and make all the changes you want. I've found that if you don't switch to 'Top View' before ungrouping the Cabinet PIO, it will become 2d rectangles only, all the 3d info is lost.

As kitchen illustrations are only part of what I do when designing a house extension I don't need Interiorcad as I'm not a kitchen specialist or cabinet maker. I'll continue with my exploration of VWA kitchen cabinets to fully assess the capabilities in the hope that with some custom items I can get a suitable symbol library.

For the price of interiorCAD XS....I can't imagine why anyone would stick to the Vectorworks libraries. I used the VW cabinets until I purchased interiorCAD....there's no comparison. Given speed, efficiency and flexibility of InteriorCAD XS it would probably pay for itself on the first project.

Adoption of the 2010 Standards also establishes a revised reference point for Title II entities that choose to make structural changes to existing facilities to meet their program accessibility requirements; and it establishes a similar reference for Title III entities undertaking readily achievable barrier removal.

State and local government facilities must follow the requirements of the 2010 Standards, including both the Title II regulations at 28 CFR 35.151; and the 2004 ADAAG at 36 CFR part 1191, appendices B and D.

If the start date for construction is on or after March 15, 2012, all newly constructed or altered State and local government facilities must comply with the 2010 Standards. Before that date, the 1991 Standards (without the elevator exemption), the UFAS, or the 2010 Standards may be used for such projects when the start of construction commences on or after September 15, 2010.

(1) Each facility or part of a facility constructed by, on behalf of, or for the use of a public entity shall be designed and constructed in such manner that the facility or part of the facility is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities, if the construction was commenced after January 26, 1992.

(i) Full compliance with the requirements of this section is not required where a public entity can demonstrate that it is structurally impracticable to meet the requirements. Full compliance will be considered structurally impracticable only in those rare circumstances when the unique characteristics of terrain prevent the incorporation of accessibility features.

(ii) If full compliance with this section would be structurally impracticable, compliance with this section is required to the extent that it is not structurally impracticable. In that case, any portion of the facility that can be made accessible shall be made accessible to the extent that it is not structurally impracticable.

(iii) If providing accessibility in conformance with this section to individuals with certain disabilities (e.g., those who use wheelchairs) would be structurally impracticable, accessibility shall nonetheless be ensured to persons with other types of disabilities, (e.g., those who use crutches or who have sight, hearing, or mental impairments) in accordance with this section. 152ee80cbc
