1 Introduction

Here, we are going to illustrate an interesting application of integration on the measurement of cardiac output i.e. the application of calculus in medicine.

Cardiac output depends on the following factors:

1 . Cardiac rate and Stroke volume

2. Arterial Blood Pressure

3. Blood pumping per unit time

Here, we will be talking about Dye-dilution method to calculate the cardiac output analytically.

2 Definition

The volume of blood pumped by heart in unit time is known as the cardiac output of the heart. It can also be defined as the blood

flow into the aorta. A interesting method Dye-dilution is used to measure the cardiac output. It needs the basic knowledge of integration.

3 Dye-dilution method

In this method, a dye is inserted into the right atrium and flows with blood into the right aorta. Mostly, in the recent years, indocycanine green, also known as cardiogreen is used for the Dye-dilution test.

At some time intervals, concentration of dye is measured through a probe placed in aorta, and from these concentrations, the cardiac output is computed. In this project we shall compute the cardiac output.

5 Conclusion and Uses

• During exercise, statistically the best method to determine the cardiac output is Dye-dilution(Cardiogreen) test.

• The error in this method to determine cardiac output is less than 5 percent.

• This method provide us with the stable cardiac output for 10s at exercise and about 30s at rest.

• This method has immense use in modern laboratories to study changes in central haemodynamics in essential hypertension at rest and also during exercise, and also to study the haemodynamic alterations induced by anti-hypertensive agents.

• It can be used in measuring the blood pressure during exercise and diastolic blood pressure.

  • This can be very useful for athletes bacause many of them have passed away due to cardiac abnormalities.

• This method will be useful to know the blood blokages and thus will help the abnormal patients.
