In summer it is generally wiser to let nature rejoice. In the Wild Life Areas of the Surrey Square Park just some remedial or emergency work is usually done by the Friends of SSP and a light routine maintenance, ideally weekly, is generally all is needed.
After all the place should be enjoyed!
This May is going to be wet and cold and certainly this Wednesday is not exception but still together with Pete (The Wildman of Kinglake) we strolled over for some check up.
The place is verdant and fresh (actually windy and cold) but what a site, what a contrast with the surrounding concrete jungle. just a look at the beautiful Lesser burdock (Arctium minus) was enough to hearten the less sturdy and even the Wildman is groaning less (for him a sign of rapturous attention).
Some worries about fire is always present but this year between some serious trimming of the dried bush in the previous autumn and the wet season, so far, it is less of a concern.
Some rubbish is always collectable and Pete take the occasion to try out his skills (well sort off...)
So what all the attraction of getting wet, wind-chilled and maddy?
and even in this rainy day some flowers bring a ray of sunshine to all of us:
Rosebay (aka fireweed epilobium angustifolium) , elderflower (sambucus nigra) in full bloom in spite of the weather, or this pretty but (to me) unknown type of tanacetumor the gorse flowers(Ulex europeus), so delicate and vibrant , even the amble moss (sphagnum) or the pearly web of un of our spiders (tetragnatha extensa) all of them make springtime in our hearts.
At the end ouerve is left to the Blac bird (Turdus merula) the onour to sing for us all:
