The Baby New Year is a personification of the start of the New Year commonly seen in editorial cartoons. He symbolizes the "birth" of the next year and the "passing" of the prior year; in other words, a "rebirth".[1] Baby New Year's purpose varies by myth, but he generally performs some sort of ceremonial duty over the course of his year such as chronicling[2] the year's events or presiding over the year as a symbol.[3]

The myth most associated with him is that he is a baby at the beginning of his year, but Baby New Year quickly ages until he is elderly (like Father Time, with whom he is often associated[6]) at the end of his year. Very rarely is the Baby New Year depicted as any age other than a baby or as a very old man. Some stories, especially those with depictions of years past, will have him bear a strong likeness to key events in his time.[7] At this point, he hands over his duties to the next Baby New Year, while he either dies or remains in this state and retires.[8]

The stereotypical representation of Baby New Year is as a baby boy wearing nothing more than a diaper, a top hat and a sash across his torso that shows the year he is representing (e.g. 2023).[9][7][10] He is sometimes depicted holding or associated with an hourglass, a noisemaker, or other item either pertaining to time or New Year's Day festivities. Often, he is not a complete newborn but instead more closely resembles a toddler, because he is frequently shown standing on his own, crawling or barely walking, or having a small amount of (usually blond) hair.

In addition to being a mythical figure, the title of "Baby New Year" is sometimes given to living people. The first baby born in any village or city in a certain year may be honored by being labeled as the official Baby New Year for that year.[11][12][13] The official Baby New Year can be male or female, even though the mythical Baby New Year is nearly always male. Attempts to name an official Baby New Year for an entire country have sometimes been made, but generally there are multiple contenders and no single Baby New Year can be confirmed. There has however been some who have come close. Numerous hospitals no longer make a Baby New Year public due to concerns that the infant will become a target for criminals.[14]

As your baby continues to grow, you will notice new and exciting abilities that develop. While babies may progress at different rates, the following are some of the common milestones your baby may reach in this age group:

Speech development is very exciting for parents as they watch their babies become social beings that can interact with others. While every baby develops speech at his or her own rate, the following are some of the common milestones in this age group:

While babies are still developing, many things intrigue them. A 1 year old may become curious about certain toys and objects that have moving parts and can be infatuated with how it works. At this stage, they will enjoy looking at bright colors and pictures in books, especially familiar images. Encourage your baby to explore new places and objects, while pointing out items by name.

Once these safety precautions are done, allow your 1 year old to roam around and feel different objects. You can let your baby feel the fuzziness of a blanket or a rough concrete surface. Allow them to squish different foods in their hand like blueberries, and discover what items feel the same or have different textures.

At 1 years old, your baby is trying different foods and is developing food preferences. The best way to keep their food palette growing is to continue giving them new food items with different tastes and smells. They might not eat it or like it at first, but keep trying. It can take multiple tries before a baby likes a new food.

Not all law students have to take the baby bar. Law students completing their first year of law study in a juris doctor degree program at a State Bar-unaccredited registered law school, or through the Law Office Study Program, and those without two years of college work attending a California-accredited or an American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited law school must take the First-Year Law Students' Exam after completing their first year of law study.

Law students who have advanced to their second year of law study at an ABA or California-accredited law school and who have completed a minimum of 60 semester, or 90 quarter units of undergraduate work are generally exempt from the exam.

The answer depends on many factors, including where you live, whether you'll pay for childcare, and which baby products you choose. Still, this Baby Costs Calculator can help you get a sense of how much you're likely to spend during your baby's first year. Change the amounts and selections below to get a customized estimate.

For other ongoing expenses, like formula, diapers, clothes, and toiletries, we calculated how much parents would need of each item in the first year and priced the costs out, using an average based on the most popular brands among BabyCenter parents.

For one-time costs like baby gear and nursery items, we utilized our editors' expertise to create a list of commonly purchased items for a baby's first year. We selected a representative product within each category that we know is popular among the BabyCenter Community (many are even Best of BabyCenter award winners). We then averaged the retail market price of each item at three major retailers during the week of August 23, 2022 to get our final cost.

The recommendation to save $75 each month for investing toward the future/college would mean you save $16,200 by time your baby turns 18 (and potentially more if you invest these funds or use a high-interest savings account). This amount won't cover the cost of tuition for a four-year college, but would provide some funds to help your child pursue their dreams.

Our growth percentile calculator shows how your baby's size compares with other boys or girls the same age. Just enter your child's weight, height (aka length), and head circumference, and we'll calculate a percentile for each.

Don't be concerned if your child doesn't fall right in the middle of the growth chart, though. There's a wide range of normal, and your baby's measurements now don't necessarily reflect what size they'll be as an adult.

It's normal for some children to be in the 10th percentile for weight, while others are in the 90th percentile. The most important thing is that your baby is growing at a healthy and consistent rate, no matter what percentile they're in.

If you're worried about your baby's weight gain, call your baby's pediatrician. They may have you come in for a visit, since it's important to have your baby weighed on a consistent scale that can accurately measure weight in pounds and ounces.

Lay your baby down on a flat surface and stretch a measuring tape from the top of the head to the bottom of the heel. Since babies' knees naturally bend a bit, you may need a second person to stretch out their legs while you take the measurement.

Record your child's length to the nearest tenth of a centimeter or inch. (In the hospital, birth length is often recorded in centimeters, but your pediatrician's office will likely record baby length in inches. What you do is up to you!) Your record might be a little different than the doctor's, but that's okay.

Percentiles are used to measure the growth of babies and children. Percentiles show how your baby or child's height, weight, and head circumference compare to an average for other children the same age. Whether your child is in the 90th percentile or the 10th percentile, the most important thing is that they maintain consistent growth.

Your baby's doctor will measure their height, weight, and head circumference at every visit. The doctor will compare these numbers to growth chart averages and tell you what percentiles your child is in. Or, you can plug your own measurements into our calculator for a rough estimate between visits.

Growth charts track your child's growth over time and compare it to that of similar babies and kids. The doctor will plot your baby's measurements on their growth chart to make sure they're growing at a healthy rate.

After two months of sleepless nights and round-the-clock soothing, you've seen plenty of your baby's tears. Maybe you've spotted a fleeting smile, but then again, it could have been gas. Now it's time for the real reward. By around 2 months of age, your baby will smile in response to you! The sound of your voice or the sight of your face is often all it takes to trigger your baby's irresistible grin.

If the frequent sound of your baby's crying has you on edge, take heart. By 4 months, you can look forward to another sound, possibly the sweetest you'll ever hear -- your baby's laughter. The best part is how easily a baby laughs. Silly faces, tickling, and peek-a-boo are usually more than enough to set off lots of squeals and giggles.

Like no other baby milestone, a full night of sleep becomes the Holy Grail for new parents. While it is unrealistic and unhealthy to expect a newborn to sleep all night, parents can rest assured that relief will come soon. By 4-6 months, most babies are capable of sleeping through the night.

If you have an 8-month-old, you may want to put your gym membership on hold. You're about to get plenty of exercise chasing your suddenly mobile baby around the house. By 9 months, most babies crawl using both hands and feet, though some babies never crawl, preferring to creep or wriggle instead. Crawling is not an essential baby milestone, and infants who choose to scoot or creep still tend to reach other milestones on schedule.

You might call it the crown jewel of baby milestones. Perhaps no other moment is met with more anticipation (or camera clicks) than a baby's first step on their own. But not all babies walk by their first birthday. The normal range is anywhere from 9 to 17 months, with most babies taking at least a few steps by about 13 months. ff782bc1db
