What You Need
A computer with an Ethernet port and a web browser.
An Ethernet cable to connect the computer to the SonicWall firewall.
A paper clip, pen, or screwdriver to press the reset button on the firewall.
A backup file of your SonicWall configuration (if available and supported).
Steps to Reset the SonicWall Firewall Password
Disconnect the power supply from the SonicWall firewall.
Locate the reset button on the back or bottom of the firewall. The button is usually small and inconspicuous and may be recessed into the surface of the device.
Press and hold the reset button with the paper clip, pen, or screwdriver while reconnecting the power supply to the firewall.
Continue holding the reset button until the test light starts blinking. This indicates that the firewall has entered the safe mode utility.
Release the reset button and wait for the firewall to boot up.
Connect your computer to the X0 interface of the firewall with the Ethernet cable. Set your computer NIC adapter to the IP address 192.168.168.20 and use the gateway 192.168.168.168.
Open your web browser and enter [https://192.168.168.168] in the address bar. You may see a security warning about the certificate, click "Continue" or "Advanced" and proceed to the website.
Enter the default administration credentials: admin password.
Register the SonicWall by following the prompt in the upper right-hand corner of the GUI. If you cannot register due to a DNS error, navigate to Network DNS and set the SonicWall DNS for any public DNS server (8.8.8.8 4.2.2.2).
If you have a supported backup file of your configuration, import it by navigating to System Settings Import Settings. When the firewall reboots, the credentials will be set to default and you can change them by navigating to System Administration.
If you do not have a backup file of your configuration (or it is unsupported as it is coming from an incompatible firmware/device), you will need to reconfigure your firewall from scratch by following the [SonicWall documentation](https://www.sonicwall.com/support/documentation/).
Conclusion
Resetting the SonicWall firewall password is a simple process that can be done using the safe mode utility. However, it will also erase your current configuration and require you to restore it from a backup file or reconfigure it manually. Therefore, it is recommended that you always keep a backup file of your configuration and change your password regularly to avoid forgetting or losing it.
