Several of the Tuskegee Airmen risked court martial and execution and refused to sign the reprimand. The Airmen call this "the Freeman Field Mutiny."
Later, the convictions of the Tuskegee Airmen were overturned.
Some historians believe this is the first significant protest in the Civil Rights movement that soon followed.
Partially as a result of the performance of the Tuskegee Airmen, President Truman, on July 26, 1948, signed Executive Order 9981, desegregating the United States Military.
