What actually happened?: In spite of the ongoing war, the Supreme Court was determined to protect Americans' first amendment privileges. The Barnette family was a sincere group of Jehovah's Witnesses who think pledging to the flag is idolatry and military service is against Christ. The Barnette children, and every public school student afterwards, are permitted to sit down during the pledge and remain quiet (so long as they do not create a disturbance).
