Note: If you received a Purple Heart, you don’t need to meet a service requirement. But you’ll need to request to transfer your benefits while you’re still on active duty. (Ref. Transfer Your Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits | Veterans Affairs (va.gov) )

Service Member must be eligible for GI Bill Ch. 33
Service members can transfer up to 36 months of unused education benefits to their eligible dependents.
If service members have already used some of their benefits, they can transfer what they have not used.
Service members can initiate a transfer of education benefit months to their dependents (the student) while they are on Active Duty. After a service member separates or retires, they can only reallocate those months that were transferred while on Active Duty unless a dependent to whom the service member allocated benefits passes away and they have other eligible dependents.
Service members will incur a 4 year service obligation from the date they submit the request. This may mean you need authorization from your Commander to extend or re-enlist to cover that service obligation.
