About the Training

The Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Pre-Service training program is divided into 3 phases.


Phase I - Independent Studies

This portion of the training can be completed online. This training includes viewing videos, achieving certificates via testing, viewing power points, reading articles and case studies. 8 hrs.


Phase II - Classroom Training

This portion of the training is learner-centered, interactive and hands-on. Some of the topics include the GAL Mission Statement, Best Interest Advocacy, Cultural Diversity & Competence, Educational Advocacy, The Child Protective System, The Court Process, Path of the Case, Child Safety, Building Relationships, Working with Community Partners, and much more. 14 hrs.


Phase III - Fieldwork Training

This is the most exciting portion of the training when the new volunteer gets to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in the first two phases. This phase includes courtroom observation, administrative responsibilities, face to face visit with children and their families. During this portion of the training the new volunteer is coached and supported by an experienced GAL program manager and/or mentor. 10 hrs.
