On the same day that Lord Emsworth and his younger son Freddie are travelling to London by train, a young man by the name of Psmith rings the bell at the home of Mike Jackson, only to be informed by the maid that mr. Jackson is not in. After having given her his name so that she may tell mr. Jackson who has called, explaining at length that the P in Psmith is silent, he steps down and walks to the end of the street where he encounters the man he was lookin for. Having told Mike Jackson that he just decided to quit his job at his uncle's fish business, showing him the advertisement he has placed in the newspaper in which he offers his unrestricted services, they both repair to a nearby teashop for refreshments.
