On this beautiful summer's morning the seigneur of Blandings Castle is staring out of the windows of the library - without seeing much because he has lost his glasses. His butler Beach has just informed him that a search has proved unsuccessful but that he will continue his efforts, and when his younger son Freddie appears, providing unhelpful suggestions, he sends him away. Finally his scretary Rupert Baxter shows up and tells him that his glasses are hanging on his back. Lord Emsworth's joy at having his eyesight restored is however greatly diminished when Baxter reminds him that he has to go to London to give lunch at his club to a famous Canadian poet by the name of mr. McTodd at the initiative of his sister Constance. Just then Lady Constance comes in and tells him that he also has to see a miss Halliday at his club after lunch, who is hired to catalogue the castle's library. His prospect of a full day out in the blooming castle garden reduced to a mere morning before having to leave for the city, the Earl of Blandings resigns himself to the inevitable.
