The Hero and their allies begin the journey back to the Ordinary World. Some works are devoted soully to this step. The epic poem by Homer The Oddesy is completely about the journey from the Trojan War back to Thebes.
So we start off with the Resurrection or Return. This can be a literal resurrection like Harry Potter, or John Snow from Game of Thrones. This could also mean a figurative resurrection where the hero didn’t die but has certainly been changed. After the final battle the hero is different than before. Perhaps physically they show scars from their battle. Maybe an allied or Mentor is killed in the battle. The final battle has caused the hero to see things differently and we can see a shift from the hero we say in the ordinary world before and the hero heading back now.
The hero eventually “returns home with the elixir.” What is an elixir? It’s like a magic potion that heals the ordinary world. In some cases the “elixir” is literally medicine for the town. Other times the elixir is a calming peace that evil has been defeated and there is no more harm that can come to the ordinary world.
Finally we reach the resolution. Our hero returns to their ordinary world with their new experience. Perhaps there is new found riches, or rewards. There could be just the admiration from the rest of his/hers people. Then there is the possibility that nothing changes and nobody notices anything other than our hero.
Here is the exciting part of being back in the ordinary world. Now you in a position to answer the next call to action. Only this time you have the skills and knowledge that you didn’t have before. Perhaps now you can be the mentor, or an Ally.
That concludes this course. I hope you enjoyed learning about the hero’s journey as much as I enjoyed teaching about it. I look forward to seeing your presentations on your favorite hero’s journeys and before we go I just want to remind you one last thing. You are the author of your own hero journey remember to make a good one!
Remember in the beginning of this course when I said you already have seen this. Here is a new holiday commercial selling Jeeps that walks through the entire Hero Journey.
