I have a single page document (with lots of separate text boxes and objects) that I have to update then print and distribute to our team, sometimes many times a day, they want version numbers on it and I've found it hard to remember to manually adjust them every time, leading to conflicts. I've been told that a date/time stamp isn't good enough. Is there anything I can do to make this happen? I'm not an advanced user but happy to follow through complex instructions if it will fix my dilemma! I'm not worried if it accidentally updates to a later version number before I print it, it's more important that I can't print it out with a non-changed version number e.g. it's okay if the last time I printed it was V10 then the next one that prints ends up being V14. Thanks in advance for any help!

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any auto-numbering that is merely standard numbers within InDesign. The only auto-numbering which exists are all based upon document frameworks such as page numbers, chapter numbers, sections, etc. You really can't add a random number that auto-updates. You would need to run a script to update it or manually update it. Both of which would require more interaction that merely using a timestamp as a text variable.

I realise this is an old thread but I came across it trying to solve the same issue. The method above is the one that I used but instead of adding a time stamp, just define a custom text variable and for the type select "custom text". Name it "Revision Number" and then just type whatever you like in the Text box. In my case we use capital letters. Then if you insert the text variable wherever you need the version number to appear in the document, then you can just update the text variable you just created and change the text to B, C and so on. It will then update all the instances of the variable text in your document. There's a good explanation here: -variables.html

Page numbers are a must while working on large documents. You can add a page number marker that updates automatically. As you add, remove, or rearrange pages in the document, the page number updates accordingly. You can also format and style page number markers.

Use the Numbering & Section Options dialog box to changethe page numbering style to use a different format. You can alsouse this dialog box to restart page numbering or to start page numberingat a number you specify.

I'm designing an annual report for work, and need to make it so that the cover and back cover do not count as pages towards the page count in the document. I have automatic page numbers in the master pages, and have applied "none" to the front and back cover, so that the page number isnt there, but it still count them as pages in the document (makes sense), so that page one of my document is actually labeled page 2, and so on and so forth until page 49.

Next you'll get a warning telling you that you already have a section that starts with 1. You can either disregard this warning, or change the page numbering style to something else (i, a., 01 etc.) which I recommend.

Double-click onto page 3. Click the Pages panel menu button flyout and choose Numbering and Section Options. Since you are targeted onto page 3, tell it to set numbering to 1 and click ok. It will now be numbered starting from 1.

The last thing to be aware of is in your InDesign Preferences. See screen shot. Notice that I have Page Numbering set to Section Numbering. This setting reflects the way all pages are numbered in the Pages panel. Here I've provided two screen shots. One shows Section numbering. The other show Absolute numbering. If you want to print or export a PDF of the third page in your document using Section numbering you'd have to type '1'. Conversely, if you set your page numbering preferences to Absolute, typing '1' will print or export the very first page of your document.

But here's the last thing to know. REGARDLESS of whether you choose Absolute or Section numbering in your Preferences, InDesign will physically place the correct section number as your page folio. Section numbering or Absolute numbering is only there to make printing or exporting pages easier.

The page that's numbered 1 should always be the first real page of content. This means that anything that precedes the content like a copyright page, acknowledgements, or table of contents should either not be numbered or numbered something like lower case Roman numerals.

Hi! I am a student and just wrote a report using this Business Proposal Layout template off Adobe stock and i cannot delete the little company description saying 'Web design & development for Company Name' at the footer next to the page number? It just won't delete, i need this for tomorrow please help me. I basically want to replace this text and insert my own. Any helpful techniques? Thankyou

I was creating buttons in InDesign for Interactive PDF. Till certain number of buttons, it is working properly. The last couple of buttons that I created is acting weirdly. The action was supposed to hide/show another buttons. But it is not doing that. Is there any limit for number of buttons that can be created in InDesign for interactive PDF. Note: All the buttons were in same page.

Yes. In preview they work & in chrome browser also they work. But its not working in adobe reader. Its like after a certain point, whatever the changes I make in adobe indesign is NOT reflecting in Adobe pdf.

Page numbers are typically placed on the master pages, and a document can have several master pages. Use Window > Pages to navigate to the A-Master and try deleting them from there. If that's not a option, please show a screen shot of your A-Master spread with the Pages panel and Layers panel open.

It took me a while, but I figured out a simple way of adding or deleting an individual page number, viz. to delete a number on an individual page, drag the [None] master down to the page in the Pages view. To add a number to a page without a number, drag the A-Master page (verso or recto) to the page in Pages view.

I have been trying to add page numbers to my document for the last hour and have tried everything possible to add Current Page Number but no matter what I do, the option is always greyed out. Can someone please help ASAP??

But I think I've found a glitch: it won't let me set numbering for multiple pages at once. I was selecting a range of pages in the pages panel, then numbering them accordingly. I just noticed that the secion numbering works for only one page and not the entire bunch that I just applied it to!

So to be clear: I have 195 pages. The first two are numbered i and ii. The rest are 1-195. Fine. BUT: It won't let me give section prefixes to multiple pages. I select the 1-195 and give it a section name of "main-" but it only affects one of those pages and not the rest! When I grab them all and go back into the section and numbering box, it says that they ALL have the prefix, but they don't!

The short cut CTRL or Command +0 doesn't work to fit the page in window when you use the "0" on the number keypad.

That shortcut (0 on the Number Keypad) is reserved for assigning to a paragraph style, so is Ctrl/Command 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 (also on the number keypad, NOT across the top of the keyboard). CTRL or Command 0 above the "p" key will fit in window.

insert Previous or Next page number does not work. I want to have folios of "Pages 1 and 2" where I need to have the next page#. Inserting a marker (previous page or Next page results in the current page number.

OK. So... how do I fix this? I have to set up previous page numbering in master pages. What's the solution here?? The right side page 24 and page 26 are correct with previous page numbering, but the left side just uses the current page. There's no way for me to touch the previous page text frame in a on the left side master page (is there??)

Admin, I think you misunderstand the issue. We are not referring to the way you can continue text from one text frame to another. We are talking about the issue where you might have a 200-page book and you want page numbers but you don't want the cover included in the page number. ie: cover (no number) next page (page 1). The Insert Special Character > Markers > Next Page Number (IT DOESNT SHOW "NEXT PAGE NUMBER" AT ALL, IT SHOWS CURRENT PAGE NUMBER on the document you are working on)

There is a workaround. Create an extra text frame on the page you want to refer to and link both text frames together. Then the Next page number will work es expected. But the second text frame must be placed on the next page. You can place both linked text frames in page template, it will work. Annoying, stupid, very slow, but at least it works for a spread.

I have a Book document. I have a master page that uses the chapter number. It's applied to the first page of each chapter. It's supposed to update automatically. Each doc contains exactly one chapter. Pretty normal, right?

But if I look at all the chapter numbers across the book I get 1,3,4,5,6,7. The Chapter 3 should actually be Chapter 2. I checked, all the docs in the book have the right master pages set. I don't recall ever using that variable anywhere else, and I can't find a stray "2" anywhere. All docs are in the right order. There is no document between 1 and 2.

Check the problem document and see if the Number & Sections Options is set to Automatic. Technically, the numbering is controled by each document's setting--the book just updates based on those settings.

Hello. I am also encoutering this issue. My numbering for the list of figure is skipping #11 and jumped into #12 instead. And when i add a new number, it skips the odd number now. So it becomes 12, 14, 16 despite being automatic in numbering. Also, where can i find the option to "update numbering". Maybe this will resolve my issue. TIA.
