Kai is sent to a boarding school, where he struggles to fit in and make friends. He misses his mother and feels lonely and angry. He also resents his father, who rarely visits him and moves from one club to another. Kai's only solace is soccer, which he plays with passion and talent. He dreams of becoming a professional player like his father.
After several years, Milan decides to take Kai back to live with him and his new wife, Gordana, a Yugoslav woman who works as a journalist. Kai is reluctant to accept his stepmother and his new life.
