Some ideas for how to help your tamaiti at home:

Whakarongo me te Kōrero

Ask him/her to teach you and your whānau some simple sentences or new words around the house.

Identify and create labels for objects around the kāinga.

Give simple instructions at home in Māori.

Ask your tamaiti to teach your whānau some of our fun Māori kēmu.


Ask him/her to complete fun writing or spelling activities such as:

  • Creating the weekly shopping list
  • Creating and writing down simple instructions/directions to use around the kāinga
  • Helping them to email, text or write to whānau or friends.


Read with your tamaiti every day in Te Reo or English.

Ask questions and encourage them to talk about what is happening in the story.


Play card and dice games together to develop and support recall of number facts.

Point out and discuss the pāngarau (mathematics) we use in our everyday lives.
