In Ngā Mana Kākano o te Wairepo we offer Māori-medium learning with the opportunity for learning of reading and writing to be in Te Reo Māori or English. Whānau Koromiko and Whānau Tī Kōuka are our year 1 to 3 tēina classes with two kaiako in each, and Whānau Harakeke is our year 3 to 6 tuākana class with two kaiako.
explanation of the design and proverb
The Harakeke represents the whānau, Ngā Mana Kākano o te Wairepo, and how it supports and provides for the tamaiti.
At the base of the harakeke is the kākano or seed and the seventh leaf in the centre is the rito which represents the tamaiti. Both of these symbolise the growth and development of the tamaiti during their time in Ngā Mana Kākano o te Wairepo.
The harakeke is a very special plant for weavers. The flax leaf yields muka (inner fibre), a material used in some of our most prestigious taonga such as korowai. The plant is made up of a number of outer leaves which grow in fan-shaped formations, and inner leaves. The outer leaves are called awhi rito or matua (parents) and they protect the most important component - the rito, or heart of the plant.
The outer and inner leaves rely on one another; the outer leaves help to feed the rito, the source of new growth which ensures the continuing life cycle of the harakeke and this is a metaphor that reflects the growth and development of the tamaiti throughout their education in Ngā Mana Kākano o te Wairepo.
Each rau of the harakeke represents different qualities, characteristics and dimensions that will be developed throughout the child’s time in Ngā Mana Kākano o te Wairepo including; Manaakitanga, Rangatiratanga, Whakapapa, Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga, Ekea te Taumata and Whānaungatanga.
There are six rau, each representing the six iwi and the six wāhanga below:
Ngāti Koata, Ngati Toa Rangatira, Te Atiawa, Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Tama & Ngāti Rarua
The whakatauki is a metaphor for the life-long journey of the tamaiti and the pā harakeke is the kura that provides all the skills, knowledge and values that the tamaiti needs to grow strong, confident and capable and prepares them for life-long learning and success in the wider world.
