Semester 1

This week was finials so I had to do a lot of studying and work. Shakti and I finished up the earrings we were making and got the DTech Project Checklist complete. I think Zen is planning to retake product photos still so I do not know when those will be complete.

This week I finished the idea for the logo we need for the DTech lab. We are planning to CNC cut our house logo on a nice piece of wood. We plan on finishing the wood with a stain or oil, then painting the inside of the carved area to our desired colors and then filling the carved area with UV resin to make it stand out and look nice. We were considering using colored resin to fill in the logo but that presented a lot of problems with sanding and expense. It would have cost over $60 to do it that way. If we use UV resin we can be much more precise about where we put the resin and make sure that we clean off any excess before curing which will avoid the need for sanding or for adding more resin over everything. In essence it's a very complicated process and its confusing so using paint and UV resin would be the most successful.

This week in DTech I got a lot more work done than house work. I cleaned and organized the lab. I got some new 3D printers out so some people could start 3D printing. I changed the battery on the CNC and now just have to put it back together and test it. I cleaned out the front cabinets in Mr. Li's room so we can put our houses stuff into them. I also saved some of the things that Dynasty 3 made so I can display them when I have more shelving, which I need to build soon. On Thursday I worked on scripts for the machine videos that we are trying to make soon. Since we got new 3D printers I started on a new script for that and to the left is a picture of part of the script.

I need to finish my prototype for my belt rack soon, but the laser cutter has been taken up most days so we haven't had time to cut anything. I also need to help someone in our house cut stamps for a teacher. I need to do a few other things in the lab, but I don't know if I will be able to go into the lab for a while. Also next week is finals and I have to do a lot of studying. Everything is kinda overwhelming, but thats ok and good news is that Mr. Li is helping us out by not giving us a final, instead we just have to get our work done and turn it in.

Scroll 15: January 4-10

This week in DTech I had to work on only digital work and projects. The district was closed for this week to make it 2 solid weeks after Christmas to avoid spending covid if anyone happen to be with their family. I was able to complete some work for lab manager by finishing up machine safety video scripts. They were mostly complete from upturns who worked on them last year so I went in and fixed what I could as well as adding information that was needed and adding information needed for filming. I also did a little research about shelves I could make for the lab. We don't have much available storage or shelving areas in the lab so I was planning on making triangle shelving. I want to use a shape instead of just a normal shelf so it can be arranged in a lot of different ways as well as be easily rearranged if in a few years they want to add in different shelves or more shelves.

This week I also was able to make some earrings with Shakti. They aren't complete yet because we still need to add earring hooks and chain on them and that material is in the lab. Once we finish the prototype for each earring and get the design verified by Mr. Li we will finish making the rest of the earrings, complete the quote calculator and all that other fun stuff required before we can put them up for sale. I have also been extremely stressed recently and overwhelmed with the amount of work I have to complete for school, DTech and for college next year (meaning scholarship stuff). I have been trying to focus on just one thing at a time to complete everything and it has been working for the most part and I hope after finials I won't be as stressed.

This week I started my job as lab manager and I cleaned the entire lab and back patio area with the help of other upterns and interns. We hosed down the patio and swept the water away, cleaned the shed, moved the CNC's back into the shed, cleaned the lab floor, threw away destroyed material, put away material, and much more. There is still work to be done, but that for after winter break. I was planning to work a few hours at home during winter break adding to scripts for the machine videos we need to create and doing research on good shelves that we can make for the lab since we are running out of space.

This week I also finished my limited run. It isn't up on Shopify yet because of technical issues, but it will be up by February 1, 2021. Zen took some great product photos of the earrings (shown to the side). The pictures are simple but they show off the product really well and I like them.

Scroll 13: December 7-13

This week I finished the production for my limited run earrings. I still have to get product photos done, finalize the quote calculator, and get it onto Shopify to completely finish this project. Two people from my house helped in the production. One helped me laser cut the pieces and the other helped by adding a clear coat to the earrings to protect the color. The earrings should be for sale on Shopify by next weekend.

Last week I also get the position of Lab Manager for DTech. I had to fill out a lot of paperwork so it wasn't finalized until Wednesday. There is a lot to do to clean up the lab next week and I am ready to work! I am excited to fix up the lab and make it so it can operate properly again since it is cluttered with stuff from before COVID. It should be up and running properly again by Thursday so we can get a few limited runs and jobs completed before winter break and have it nice when we return from winter break.

Scroll 12: November 30 - December 6

This week I was able to laser cut a limited run of the earrings I made. I used alcohol ink pens to give them a gradient from one shade to another so they look more refined than the earrings in last weeks blog. If these sell out and I am able to make another limited run I think I am going to wood stain some of them to have a more natural look. They are not completely done yet, they are getting a clear coat to make sure that nothing will bleed or fade over time and then I have to add the rings and earring hooks. Sadly we don't have earring hooks in the lab yet so I need to make a special order for earring hooks as well as wood, acrylic, and hinges so I can finish my belt rack prototype.

We also have a new glowforge laser cutter in the lab that no one has been able to use yet because there is no aluminum exhaust pipe, well there is, it is just full of holes. So we need to get a new one of those and then I started to make instructions on how to use it and connect to it so that when people go to use it they don't have to look it up, it will just be there. I can't adequately finish the instructions unless I am able to follow them and connect to the laser cutter though, so they most likely won't be complete until next week.

Scroll 11: November 16-24

This week for DTech I began making a prototype of my belt rack and some earrings. I went into the lab and laser cut the begging pieces for my belt rack and was able to assemble them. I wasn't able to laser cut the other half of the pieces I need because there was no more wood. I think I might buy the wood just to finish up the prototype so I am able to start production for my limited run. I know a few people in my class who want to buy one so I want to start the production. I made these earrings with the laser cutter as well and I was going to put resin or epoxy inside the triangles but I wasn't able to find it anywhere in the lab so I will look again next class. I also wanted to lightly sand the earrings and maybe stain them before putting resin on it.

This week has been really hard for me because of family issues but it has made it harder to focus on my work. I have been able to get stuff done like cutting out half the pieces and designing and cutting these earrings, but I just feel drained now. I need to work on a few more things things this week before I go in to class next week such as creating a pdf files of a signature to laser cut. Luckily I have a school break to be able to do it so I just need to find the energy to do so. Wish me luck and have a good thanksgiving!

Scroll 10: November 9-15

This week we mainly went over the protocols for returning to the DTech lab on campus. Li told us the routs we need to take through his room and the lab so we don't have any paths that cross. I'm super excited to get back to school even if its just to be able to get DTech work done. It is a step and its super nice. It is also very cool that we are able to go to the lab because then we get to produce so much more work. We have machines like CNC, heat press, laser cutter, and a lot of other machines that we couldn't get to take home so being able to go to campus and work in the lab allows us to use those and create so much more work.

Scroll 9: November 2-8

This week we talked about how the next quarter will be going and ideas for what we are going to produce. My house was coming up with a bunch of ideas so we are prepared when we start producing work. The only real issue right now is that if we have an idea there is no way of really starting the process to making it and putting it on shopify for a limited run due the the checklist and other aspects not being ready for us to start the process. They need to be updated because of the pandemic and the different things we have to go through now. Once everything was completed and ready I was thinking about submitting my design for a belt rack as a limited run product. I made this my freshman year with the laser cutter and it is the best thing I have ever made and it sits in my room today. I also know a lot of people who do taeknowdo and karate so I thought that this would be a cool limited run item to have since it has the colors of the belt engraved with it.

I've had a really rough week because of outside sources, but this week in DTech set out what we are doing and how exactly to achieve it. This made this next quarter feel easier to achieve and makes the plans efficient and the steps easy to complete.

Oh, also quick side note: I would like to acknowledge Mr. Miller in this photo wearing his iconic tiger button down. I miss having Mr. Miller as my teacher because he was able to push me past my limits and also is just fun. He got all excited once to have me listen to a song because it had my name in it and it made my day. I am super happy to have Li as my teacher this year as well because it expands the idea of DTech and makes our goals seem possible. Li is also super funny. This blog is meant to show you what DTech can achieve, but I think sometimes we forget to tell our readers about the type of family you get with this class because its not only your teachers and peers it is also people who only want the best for you and want to see you succeed. They push you just enough to get started, but not enough to walk with you the whole way because they know how important hard work and dedication is. They know if they helped you ever step of the way you wouldn't feel as proud of yourself as you should before creating something new and amazing.

Scroll 8: October 19-23

This week we presented out business venture pitch to Li. In preparation I made product examples for our company. I made small soap bars and cut them out into different tiny shapes. Because I didn't have a 3D printer available the cutting of the soap bars was a little uneven, but it was the best I could do given the things I had at my house. I took an empty metal can and cut a ring out of it to shape the cutting mold. There is a picture of the shape in last weeks blog. Also the rocket ship shape I made was to flimsy and I wasn't able to made any soap bars out of it. Also when I made the products my family got to try the hand sanitizer and was willing to buy it because of the way it felt and smelled, so this might be something that my house could produce if we are into the idea.

We did our business venture pitch today and it went really well. Alana did amazing in explaining our product and what the proceeds go towards, which is non-profits aimed towards supporting firefighters and people who lost their homes because of a wildfire. I was super proud of our group work.

The other thing I did this week was finish replacing the screens of the silkscreens that Frazier let my house borrow. As I have said in my past blogs, this was extremely difficult and took a lot of time to do. The frames are still dirty from the ink and emulsion that was on them, but I got most of it off and it was difficult to do because the frames were wood so the emulsion remover just sunk into the wood instead of helping remove the emulsion. They are finally done and ready for screen printing when the time is necessary.

We also have the possibility to go back into the DTech lab and work on products there, meaning we would have access to all different types of machines and I am so excited! Li also mentioned that we could have products that are limited time, meaning we don't have a buyer, which opens up so many different opportunities for different products which I am stoked about . The possibilities are truly endless this year, even during COVID.

Scroll 7: October 12-19

This week we have been working on our business venture. My groups plan was to make mini shop bars for one time use so if you are on the run you can use them during COVID to stay healthy. We also thought that business would want to use them because we can cut out any simple shape they want, like a wave (show at the side), to make it more relevant for their business. I made a prototype of a shape so we could 3D print it in the future if we would like to, but for right now since I do not have a 3D printer available I made little soap cutters out of a can so I can make the soap bars. Our other idea is to make hand sanitizer without alcohol in it because alcohol dries your hands and it smells really bad. If you take the alcohol out of the hand sanitizer than it is will less harsh to your hands and we could make it smell like any essential oil the client wants, including lavender, tea tree, citrus, rose, and much more or we could make it smell like nothing at all.

The other important thing we did for the business venture this week was coming up with a business name and logo. We want to help firefighters and people recovering from losing their homes in California after all the major fires so we were going to put a portion of the money to a non profit to help families and firefighters recover. Since our business is also making products to help stop the spread of COVID 19 we decided to make our business name Station 19 because it incorporates our idea of helping firefighter by using the word station and the number 19 stands for COVID 19. The logo incorporates not only the a logo similar to a fire fighting logo but also has the first aid symbol to draw attention to the pandemic and recognize the people who are helping us fight against it.

This week I have also been trying to clean the silk screens that Frazier let my house borrow and it is still not going great. The emulsion does not want to be removed so I will try again to removed as much as I possibly can and then finish replacing the screens so by the end of next week I will hopefully have a picture of them all replaced and clean.

Scroll 6: October 5-11

We did not have a scroll due last week so it is now scroll 6 ( scroll 5 does not exist! ). Anyway this week we talked about different ideas that we can use for this year and different. We used the book we got from the school called Book of Ideas Volume 1 and we looked through it and tried to find what caught our eye and think about why it did. I thought the apron on page 69 was really interesting especially because we got aprons for DTech this year. I was unsure about how our logo might look, I thought it would be to bland, but by adding some simple designs on the bottom of the apron below our logo we can add to the design without taking all the focus out of our logo which would look really nice. I also sketched up a possible logo idea the other day that I think you look nice for our updated logo, however I don't think we will use it. On the bright side through it gave me the idea that we could put anchors, ships, shells, and other things like that on the bottom of our aprons like what Kate's Originals did.

Over the past two weeks I've tried to clean and rescreen the silk screens that Frazier is letting me borrow, however it has been a bigger endeavor that I hoped. The frames themselves are coated in so much emulsion that it is extremely difficult to remove. I also need to get some new screen cord to replace one of the screens because the one I took out broke into pieces due to the horrible condition of the screen. The screen was so coated in ink and emulsion that it got into the little pathway and solidified so I couldn't get the cord out in one piece without hurting the frame. Because of all these different factors, I am going to keep working and cleaning the screens to have them all ready for quarter 2.

The last thing that happened, which I would like to add in this scroll, is that I applied for a paid position for DTech. It was the C.O.O. position and they are kinda like the CEO of DTech. I did not get the position because I did not have enough experience, however I did get an uptern position (aka intern), which I am super happy about . I am very proud of my interview especially considering it was my first job interview ever and I was very scared so I took lots of notes, which helped me understand the best way to prepare for other interviews in the future. Another good thing is that one of my good friends got the position instead of me and I am super proud of her! She really deserved it and will do an incredible job.

This week we learned about Using Design Thinking to Understand Entrepreneurs. It was a very interesting lesson because we could understand why businesses today are successful. To be a successful business your products need to be desirable, feasible, and viable. Without one of these the product can not be successful and will not sell. The lesson also taught us that you need "Secret Sauce" meaning you need something that makes you stand out from your competition. These different ideas make the idea of making products easier to do because we have a guide to help us so we are on the right track to success.

This week I also get silk screens from Mr. Frazier that he let DTech borrow for the year. Both the silk screens were left in what I would consider very bad shape because of students last year using them. One of them was left covered in ink and the screen is crispy when you touch it and the other one had the emulsion completely dried but before it dried it dripped all over the frame. I just got all of the tools to be able to replace the screens so during this long weekend thats what I am going to do so they are ready to use when we need to start producing our products.

Scroll 3: September 15-20

This week we learned about Start Ups. We learned about different key terms like capital, assets, business venture, and market research. These key terms help us better understand the business world moving forward. We also learned about a checklist that helps when starting a new business venture. This helps senior year seem a lot easier to start and a lot easier to move towards success. The only thing that kinda set me back in my ideas about this year and the future is that 90% of start ups don't make it. This is a really intimidating fact, but that shouldn't stop me from trying my best and putting my best work forward, it's just something to keep in mind.

Another thing we did this week for my house was take pictures. We met at Arroyo Verde and social distances and took different group pictures for our house website. The two on the side are my favorite pictures from the photo shoot. I especially love Naomi in the first picture when she is clicking her heels together because thats just impressive to me. It was extremely nice to meet back up with the members of my house that I haven't seen in person in over 6 months and just talk about how everything has been going.

Scroll 2: September 8-13

This week we learned if we have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. We took a self-assessment to see if we have the motivations, aptitudes, and attitudes to be an entrepreneur. My scores are to the left and I am happily surprised by them. I am under the average score for entrepreneur, however I learned what I can work on to become a great entrepreneur. I need to work on my self confidence when dealing with projects and my stress levels in situations I am not used to. I also learned that my motivations and attitudes are on the right track to help me be an incredible entrepreneur.

I have learned a lot more about myself and about how I am driven to do things like being an entrepreneur. This has helped me understand this senior year a lot better and how I will approach this year to learn the most and sell the best products to help DTech thrive. This week also made the idea of making and selling products a lot more manageable because I know what I do well and what I need to work on to be the best entrepreneur I can be.

Scroll 1: August 31-September 6

In our lessons this week we learned about the basics of entrepreneurship. We learned some key terms and expanded the meaning of some words which include barriers of entry, opportunity, and bootstrapping. Barriers of entry are the obstacles you face when you are an entrepreneur; those obstacles include risk of failure, cost of capital, economies of scale, and last competition and monopolies. We expanded our meaning of opportunity by understanding that opportunity is not just pioneering a innovating product, it's also targeting a new set of customers for an existing product, created a better or cheaper version of an existing product, and devising a new business model. This was important for me to learn because I never thought of opportunity in any other way and this helped me expand my knowledge and made me a lot less intimidated by this senior year. Bootstrapping is when you use the bare minimum funds for what you are doing and instead put in time and occasionally personal funds if necessary.

These different concepts are extremely important to know for DTech this year because we want to put our best work forward. We also want to overcome the challenges of being able to go into the lab and have other people to work with due to the pandemic. Using the idea of opportunity we can design different things and be able to market them efficiently and by using bootstrapping we can effectively make products without spending too much money to produce.
