Contest Guidelines

Description

The Department of Instructional Technology is proud to be sponsoring the 2020 Digital Citizenship Contest – Digital Citizenship Rocks! Students have the option to create a poster, picture collage, video, podcast, infographic, animation, PSA, or another idea that showcases how Digital Citizenship Rocks in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. All entries must be original creations and must be in compliance with the established guidelines.

One Winner will be chosen in each school building for the following levels:

  • Kindergarten – Grade 2
  • Grade 3 – Grade 5
  • Middle School (Grades 6-8)
  • High School (Grades 9-12)

Each of the school level winners will be submitted for city-wide judging. One (1) city-wide winner will be chosen from each of the following levels:

  • Kindergarten – Grade 2
  • Grade 3 – Grade 5
  • Middle School (Grades 6-8)
  • High School (Grades 9-12)

Contest Guidelines

  • All entries must revolve around this year’s theme of Digital Citizenship Rocks.
  • All entries must convey a positive approach to Digital Citizenship.
  • Groups
    • Students may work on their entry as a group of no more than 3 students. This entry would be judged as a group entry and would follow the same judging guidelines as an individual entry.
  • Poster entries
    • Can be either hand-drawn, or computer-generated.
    • May not include the use of copyrighted materials.
    • Photos are allowed as long as the student has either taken the photo or is the subject of the photo.
  • Digital entries
    • Videos or podcasts can be no longer than 3 minutes and must be accessible by the judges. These can be saved to a Google Drive or uploaded to a website with the link shared.
  • The student and the student’s winning selection may receive publicized recognition; therefore a Parental Consent for Participation Form must be on file at the school of each winner.

Contest Timeline

The contest will begin on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at each school. The deadline for entries being submitted is Friday, February 21, 2020. No entries will be accepted after this date. (Schools may alter these dates if they choose to.)

All schools will then choose their winning entries and submit them using the link here - 2020 Digital Citizenship Contest - School Entry The Deadline for submitting school-level winners is Friday, February 28, 2020. Please ensure that a parent/guardian permission form is also included when submitting your entry.

School submissions will then be judged by members of the Department of Instructional Technology and the Digital Citizenship Committee. The top three entries in each category will then be moved to the final round by Tuesday, March 3, 2020.

All entries that have made it to the final round will then be posted to the VBSchools website for public viewing and judging. This link will be shared with all schools to advertise and encourage participation. The citywide winners will be announced on Friday, March 13, 2020.

Judging Procedures

All entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Originality of content.
  • Creativity, originality, and relevance of entries based on the theme of "Digital Citizenship Rocks!"
  • Compliance to established guidelines.

School-level judging teams should consist of a minimum of the following members:

  • 1 ITS
  • 1 LMS
  • 1 Administrator

The Citywide preliminary judging team will consist of members of the Department of Instructional Technology and the Digital Citizenship Committee.

The final judging will be open to all members of the community by accessing the contest entries through the VBSchools website.

Recognition

All students that submit entries at their schools will receive an Appreciation Certificate. (This will be shared with all schools to print and distribute to students)

Students whose entries make it to the Citywide judging will receive an additional certificate from the Department of Teaching and Learning.

All Citywide winners will receive the following:

  • Winners Plaque
  • Recognition in the Superintendent’s Report
  • Prizes
