As we move into the second half of the Spring Term, it is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and engagement of our pupils in all aspects of school life. Our timetable remains packed with exciting learning opportunities, and we are delighted to share some of the key events and activities taking place this term.
We are looking forward to celebrating World Book Day, where children will have the chance to immerse themselves in stories, dress as their favourite characters, and take part in a range of book-themed activities to inspire a love of reading.
Our pupils are also embracing the outdoors with cycle training, helping them to develop confidence and essential road safety skills. Meanwhile, our focus on planting and growing will give children hands-on experience in nurturing plants, fostering an appreciation for nature and sustainability.
As a school committed to Rights Respecting Schools values, we continue to promote children’s rights, ensuring that respect, inclusion, and kindness remain at the heart of our school community.
In the meantime, take a look at what the children have been up to – we are so proud of their hard work, creativity, and achievements.
In Nursery, the children have been busy exploring 'Growing and Healthy Eating' through hands-on activities. They practiced cutting vegetables to make thier own salad, using knives and boards to chop spring onions, baby sweetcorn, carrots, celery, potatoes, lettuce, and pak choi- developing fine motor and self-care skills.
In the EYFS allotment, they planted potato seeds and will soon add onions and broad beans. Each child also took home an onion seed to grow their own crop.
Linking to our story of the week, Supertato!, children practiced counting potatoes (0-7) onto numbered plates during maths sessions.
At the creative table, they decorated fruits, vegetables, and flowers with tissue paper and glue, combining art with healthy eating themes.
Reception were so jolly happy to have a visit from the Postal Museum. They provided a workshop and a show for the children. The children took part in an interactive performance of The Jolly Postman which brings fairy-tale land to life in a series of magical deliveries. They became a team of jolly posties using postal props, song, rhyme and Makaton signs to experience the magic of sending and receiving letters, parcels and postcards.
Finally, the children wrote their own letters or postcards for The Jolly Postman.
As part of Year 1's DT topic on making mechanisms, the children were introduced to mechanisms. The children understood that mechanisms are parts of an object that move together.
They began by looking at a teddy bear and discussing how they could make it move and in what direction. The children then demonstrated these movements using their own bodies.
Next, they explored mechanisms further by creating a car scene and a rabbit in a hat. They looked at up-and-down mechanisms as well as side-to-side mechanisms. The children created their own mechanisms, explored moving the sliders, and were able to explain how the slider moved through the slot. To ensure the rabbit slider only moved up and down and not side to side, the children also created guides to keep it on the correct path.
This week in Year 2, the students have had fun exploring Edward Lear’s The Owl and the Pussycat. Using the poem as inspiration, they’ve created their own fun and imaginative diary entries based on the journey the two animals took. With lots of creativity and great use of descriptive language, they've brought new characters and adventures to life. Their writing really shows off their growing skills, Well done Year 2!
As part of the Year 1 and Year 4 art exhibit at Evelina London Hospital, Year 3 students took part in the London Landmarks activity organised by Miss D. Using materials like chalk, they recreated famous London landmarks, from Big Ben to the London Eye. The activity allowed students to explore their creativity while learning about the city’s history. The children enjoyed experimenting with different textures and colours, and their vibrant artwork added a unique touch to the exhibit, showcasing their talent and connection to London.
The Year 4’s were lucky enough to have an amazing trip to Sky Up Academy Studios. The children had the opportunity to create their own news reports on the topic ‘our planet’. They had a variety of roles to choose from such as being an editor, director, script writer, eyewitness, reporter and a camera operator. Once the children decided on their exciting roles, they discussed in groups what their news reports would include. The children came up with fantastic ideas for their reports and the editor, director and camera operator had the crucial role in ensuring that everything was ready for the filming. The eyewitness and reporter then had a major role in acting out the news report, reading the script prepared by the important role of the script writer. The children then filmed and recorded their amazing news reports and they all did a fantastic job.
In PSHE Year 5 have been looking at First Aid and learnt how to tie bandages correctly. They went through the RICE steps and then practiced treating “wounds” on partners. We were very impressed with the engagement and maturity shown by all, especially as this is such an important skill to have. Well done!
Year 5 went on a trip to the London Transport Museum this week! It was part of our 'Future You' project, where we have been researching how to create future transport in London more sustainable. The trip was very informative, we saw how transport in London has evolved and also took part in a workshop on how transport may want to be developed in the future. Well done to all the children for their brilliant behaviour and thank you to our 2 parent volunteers!
Year 6 have returned to school focused and ready to work! It’s been fantastic to see them settling back into routines with enthusiasm and determination.
This week, we also had a Kooth webinar all about mental health, giving pupils valuable strategies to support their well-being. In addition, the NHS school nurses visited to carry out health checks and share important information about staying healthy. A great start to the half-term!
We’re excited to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6th March! This year’s theme is 'Read Your Own Way', encouraging children to embrace their love of reading in a way that’s special to them.
To mark the occasion, children have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character and take part in our World Book Day Parade. A winner from each key stage will be chosen for the most creative and inspiring costume!
We look forward to a fantastic day full of stories, imagination, and fun. Happy reading!
Science Week will take place from 10th - 14th March 2025 at Vauxhall Primary School. This year’s theme is Change and Adapt, and throughout the week, children will explore how the world has evolved and how living things, including humans, adapt to their environments. Students will take part in exciting STEM activities, including hands-on experiments and immersive experiences in a science dome, helping them understand the concept of change in both nature and technology.
We will also be hosting a Design a Lab Coat competition, where students can get creative and have the chance to win a fantastic prize! We kindly ask parents to donate any old white shirts (adult or children) for this activity, which will be transformed into unique lab coats.
To wrap up the week, on Friday, 14th March, students can dress up as a crazy scientist, caveman, or futuristic character for our Science Dress-Up Day. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and curiosity about how the world changes and adapts. It’s sure to be an inspiring and fun-filled week of learning!
The 'WakeUpWednesday' guides empower and equip parents, carers and educators with the confidence and practical skills to be able to have informed and age-appropriate conversations with children about online safety, mental health and well-being, and climate change.
Each week we will post a relevant guide to support our school community's knowledge and understanding of how to keep safe online and new things to be aware of.
This week is a online safety focus on the gaming platform 'Marvel Rivals'. Please click on the PDF to enlarge it.
