Alternative Learning

Vashon Island School District

VISD Alternative Learning

What is FamilyLink?

FamilyLink is individualized learning for students who are learning mostly at home. We support your family in the following ways.

Enrichment Courses

We offer multi-age courses on-site for grades K-8. This opportunity gives students who learn mostly at home some classroom experience with highly talented teachers and time with peers. This year’s offerings include Visual Art, Math & Logic Lab, Language Arts, Botany: Hands-On, Coding & Circuitry, and Spanish. Classes meet Wednesdays for grades 3-5 and 6-8 and Thursdays for K-2. (See below.)

Teacher Expertise

Each student is assigned a certificated teacher. Student and parent meet with the teacher regularly. The teacher collaborates with the parents to create and sustain a viable learning plan for the student.

Curriculum Library

We provide curriculum by means of a continuously restocked library. Our teachers make special orders for families as needed. Books and most other curricular materials can be checked out for the school year.

Student Learning Materials

Your teacher can order some consumable materials for student learning, including workbooks and art supplies.

Outside Learning Experiences

We provide vouchers to help defray the cost of learning experiences on Vashon Island. Participants in this year’s vendors include Vashon Center for the Arts, UMO, Vashon Wilderness Program, Paperwings, Music, Kenpo Karate, Swimming Classes with Dayna Rogers, and Vashon Green School.

Community Yoga

On Thursdays, 1:30-2:30, Christine Nelson teachers a yoga class for ages 0-99. Students, families and staff are all welcome.

Field Trips and Celebrations.

We host a number of gatherings and fieldtrips each year. This year we have a welcome back pool party and an end-of-year pool party. We’ll go to Seattle Children’s Theater, among other things. We’ll have a craft party before the winter holidays and a Celebration of Learning in the Spring. The past two years, we've done a Shakespeare play in the Spring. We hope to do somesuch again this year. Stay tuned.

We are located on the district campus, near the high school. We enroll throughout the school year. Please contact us for more information about alternative learning.
