Top Reading Tips

1. Have books available!

Have them here, have them there, have them absolutely everywhere! The best way to get better at reading is TO READ daily. Children need access to books to read. Check out our Summer Reading Page and What to Read sections for resources.

2. Talk!

Vocabulary can be built anywhere and at anytime. Kids learn more words when we talk to them about things they know and things they don't know. Our Vocabulary section and these Conversation Starters may provide some more ideas.

3. Student choice!

Kids who choose their own books are much more likely to keep reading! The booklists on our What to Read link can give you some ideas. Also, our Reading Together link offers thoughts about how to pick "just right" books and tips on how to read with your child.

4. Balance screen time with printed word time.

Research shows that students benefit the most when there is a balance between screen time and other activities. The goal is to read every day in some format, but research does show that the quality of shared reading with your young child is proven to be most valuable when you use print books rather than electronic. The key is to keep reading!
