The most important part of any unit is understanding the content and learning targets. To do this, each unit has four pages of notes that will be completed by students as we work through the lecture videos found here and other unit materials found here. We will generally only do one 5-minute lecture video with questions and a half-page of notes at a time to not overwhelm the student with information.
Each page of notes has information and space useful to the student. The Image below shows this and a description of each lettered section follows.
A. This is the Social Studies California Content Standard that this page is focused on.
B. This is a more student friendly explanation of what the standard is saying a student should be able to do by the end of studying this information.
C. These are example test questions that may appear on the unit assessment. At least one of these questions from each page of notes will show up on the test, so students should challenge themselves to see if they can answer them.
D. These boxes are used by students as a self-check to see if they understand the content. If questions about this page are missed on the Kahoot! quiz or unit assessment, they should mark an ‘N’ and focus their attention here.
E. These are the notes students will receive from the teacher or the Google Slides ‘Unit Presentation’ that can be found at the bottom of the unit pages on the Class Website. Students can write their own, but will be provided with material to fill-in if they are struggling to summarize key ideas.
F. his section is for students to clarify ideas, come up with questions for things they are struggling on, or give themselves directions for a later time. It is their space to do with as they please to help them succeed in the unit.
G. In history, the content we learned is usually related to something we have previously studied. This box simply informs the student about why the information on this page is important and how it applies to things we have already learned.
H. These are the overall goals for the page. If the student cannot honestly fulfill the learning target, they should leave the box blank and know that this is a page they need to focus on. Once they feel that understanding is achieved, put a check in the box and move on.
There are only two sections on the notes page where students will write a significant amount, sections E and F. Section E will have the notes provided, but students can write their own if they choose. Section F is entirely up to the student to use and will look different depending on who is filling it out. If you are a parent looking at your student’s work you should ask yourself, ‘Does this information look helpful?’
Because we try not to have students do too much work in any given day, usually we will only complete one-half page of notes in a single class period. The steps below will show us how a page of notes would be done over a two-day span.
We will use the Google Slide Unit Presentation as seen in the Edpuzzle lecture videos for each unit. The Title page for this particular can be seen below:
The teacher will briefly cover information presented earlier in the unit or introduce the concepts that will be discussed by the class.
Students will watch the lecture video that has only 1-2 slides with highlighted text the students will copy into the corresponding parts of their notes pages.
The Edpuzzle lecture videos must be watched until completion and all questions must be answered to get credit. Students are not graded down for missed questions.
The two slides for Day One can be seen below.
Please take note that students are not asked to copy many notes per day.
Once the notes are copied one the page, it is the student's job to write "Student Notes" onto the right hand portion of the notes page. These Student Notes can include the following:
A question that the student has because they are confused about something.
A rewritten summary statement about what the notes say.
A comment that relates the notes to something they previously learned.
Notes on a missed question during the Edpuzzle lecture video.
Please note that a student does not have to understand the notes to successfully complete the Student Notes.
Each complete page of notes must include a total of 4 Student Notes (2 per day).
All we will do is repeat the process from Day One, but build on the previous information with two new slides for notes seen in the next Edpuzzle lecture video.
The two slides for Day Two can be seen below.
Please take note that students are not asked to copy many notes per day.

This is what a properly completed page of notes looks like.
Because it is spread out over two days per page and students are only expected to write a few entries into the Student Notes, you can see that it is not a lot of work to do on any given day.
Students are also generally given about 5-10 minutes of times at the end of each class to finish up any work they need.
Below is a brief reminder of what to look for when you are checking a Student Workbook's notes.
