Valparaiso University invites the campus and regional community to the 2025 Jonathan K. Schoer Symposium for Interdisciplinary Studies featuring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics on Saturday, March 29, 2025 in Neils Science Center starting at 9 a.m. This year’s symposium will focus on stories of environmental justice. We will have two keynote speakers focused on the impact of large-scale animal farms on surrounding communities, and the response to lead contamination found in the soil of a local community. We will share challenges, legal concerns, and success stories happening in the environmental justice work occurring throughout the region.
The location of the event will be in Neils Science Center.
Due to a 5K run on campus, please enter campus through the LaPorte entrance. Parking is provided on the top floor of the parking ramp (map is provided on the parking page on this website)
Check-in will occur in the main lobby, where there will also be a variety of information booths from community partners.
The event will also be broadcast virtually - click here for links
Note: Valparaiso University is in the central time zone.
This symposium has been named after Dr. Jonathan Schoer, who was a valued member of the Valparaiso University Chemistry Department and an active environmental researcher in NW Indiana. Jon was diagnosed with ALS in 2018 and he advocated for improvements in ALS research at both the state and national level after his diagnosis. Jon also requested that we establish this conference as an ongoing event to bring cutting edge science and policy to local community members. Jon passed away in 2020, and we dedicate this conference in his memory.
