Edpuzzle to engage students in assessment

Edpuzzle is a web-based interactive video and formative assessment tool that lets users crop existing online videos and add content to target specific learning objectives. Teachers can search the extensive library or upload their own videos to customize them with voice-overs, audio comments, embedded assessment questions, and additional resources.

If you're using others' content as a starting point, Edpuzzle's search will suggest high-quality videos from sites such as YouTube, Khan Academy, TED Talks, and Vimeo. There's also the option to choose content from the curriculum library, which is a collection of videos organized by content area. There are ways to use this with all content areas, so go to the site and see what they might have for you to use next week.

Allsides.com mission is to expose people to information and ideas from all sides of the political spectrum so they can better understand the world — and each other. They strive to provide balanced news coverage, media bias ratings, civil dialogue opportunities, and a technology platform for everyone that can be integrated by middle and high schools.

If you teach Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, or Math, there are going to be articles that are of interest to you.

They provide Media Bias Ratings for nearly 600 media outlets and writers, so users can easily identify different perspectives. Learn how AllSides rates media bias, or learn about the different types of media bias.

5 Clue challenges with your content

Michael Soskil is the creator of a site dedicated to the 5 Clue Challenge.

From Mr. Soskil: "All over the world, people live in diverse regions, and climates with different animals, plants, and interesting nuances. As I have traveled the world working with teachers and students, I have tried to bring experiences back to my own classes. In each video you will get 5 clues to guess a location, animal, or person. Some videos were created by me as I traveled. Others were submitted to me by teachers and children from around the globe. Your mission is to do research and figure out the answer to each challenge in as few clues as possible."

You can create 5 Clue Challenges without making videos. They can be related to any content area. If you want help setting one up and don't know how to get started, get in touch with me and we'll take a look together.

VSD 5 Clue Challenge

Guess this VSD school in the fewest amount of clues:

1) Most students at this school are shorter than five feet tall.

2) Mrs. Smith deals with some of their youngest patrons.

3) Their main school color is blue.

4) The school is on a street that runs north/south.

5) Halley, Hale-Bop, and Swift-Tuttle are some famous examples of their namesake.

The winner is...

Thanks to all of you that entered the October Newsletter raffle. The answer you needed to find was 'fonts and font effects', or something along those lines.

The winner of the $5 coffee card, chosen randomly from all entries, is Tracie Ingram. She is a GT teacher at Birch who works with students from the east side of the district and happens to be one of my best clients (this did not help her chances of winning).

Look for your chance to win in November!
