Teacher Referral Packet

Dear Patrons of the Valley View School District,

Our Gifted and Talented education program provides a differentiated curriculum for students in need of gifted services. Parents, teachers, and community members may refer a child for evaluation to see if they truly need additional academic enrichment and support. To refer a child, please complete the proper forms and return to Mrs. April Johnson in the Intermediate(3rd/4th) building.

The Arkansas Department of Education states “Gifted and talented children and youth exhibit high potential or ability whose learning characteristics and educational needs require qualitatively differentiated educational experiences and/or services.”

The Valley View School District uses a multi-criterion approach to placement for gifted services. When a student is referred for our Gifted and Talented education program, a variety of assessments are administered and data is carefully analyzed to indicate if a need exists for additional academic support. Non-placement in our Gifted and Talented education program does not mean that a child is not bright, talented, or potentially gifted in some area, rather that he/she does not meet the criteria for additional academic options at this time.

Before referring a student, please refer to the other items posted on our district’s website related to characteristics of gifted individuals, the referral and placement process, etc. We greatly appreciate your interest in our Gifted and Talented education program.

Sincerely,

Sara Osment, Curriculum Director and Gt Coordinator

April Johnson, GT Facilitator Grades 4-6

Andrea White, Enrichment Grades K-2 and Facilitator Grade 3
