Study Skills at Vale High School is designed to develop, strengthen, and improve skills for positive academic performance and achievement. Through content area course work as well as re-teaching of concepts, students will be taught learning strategies which focus on comprehension, memory, organization, study skills, and test-taking strategies. In addition, students in Study Skills will become more familiar with their accommodations unique to them. Self-advocacy skills and transitional planning are also part of the instructional program. Students' goals are progress monitored and reviewed throughout the school year according to their IEPs (Individual Educational Plans). Please note: Study Skills class is not a study hall.
Instructional Goals:
To assist students in becoming as independent and successful as they can
To monitor the students’ progress toward meeting IEP goals and to assist the student in successfully completing all courses of study
To maintain communication with the student, parents, teachers, counselors, and other staff involved with the education of the student
To introduce, teach and develop skills needed for learning
Study Skills Classroom Components:
Goal Setting and progress monitoring
Weekly review of Accommodations specific to each student
Time Management
Prioritization & Organization
Self-Advocacy
Storing and Remembering Information/Test-Taking
Classwork support with Reading, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science & Electives
Transitional support and planning
Expectations:
Students will come to class prepared with the materials needed for Study Skills. Students are expected to maintain an assignment notebook, or another organizational method specific to student preference to keep track of assignments, projects, and tests/quizzes. Students will complete assigned work in order to achieve goals on their IEPs and review/complete assignments from their content-area classes.
To Parents:
Hello! My name is Alisha Seals and I will be your students’ teacher for Study Skills (formerly known as Resource Room) during the 2026-27 school year. This is my 19th school year teaching, and my 8th year teaching in Vale! My education consists of a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Secondary Education and a Master’s degree in Special Education & Work-Based Learning. My number one goal is to help your child have a successful year given each of their classes.
Personally, My husband Ryan and I reside in Fruitland, Idaho and outside of the classroom we keep busy with our kids’ schedules. I love to travel, try new recipes, volunteer, catch a good movie and stay active whether hitting the Pilates reformer or practicing my tennis game.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding your students progress or any concerns you may have. Thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to working with you!
