What does it look like to educate for just futures, for collective liberation, for mutual thriving of people and planet?
Guided by our ‘why’ - our purpose and ambition as articulated in the new strategy and educational vision - the work in learning innovation is dedicated to empowering a global cohort of compassionate young systems leaders who go beyond treating symptoms but strive to understand root causes and initiate responses to complex and interdependent human and ecological challenges.
In 2022, a small team of visionary educators, curriculum developers, and students at UWC Atlantic and the International Baccalaureate took on the work of designing an innovative new course that is responsive to what the world needs of UWC/IB graduates, and what students need from their UWC education. It took the shape of the Systems Transformation Pathway: Leadership for Just Futures.
In August 2023, the programme launched at UWC Atlantic with 24 pioneers who became the first ever graduates of this programme globally. In August 2024, welcomed a second generation of 52 new students into the programme.
We are now recruiting the third generation of students in the Systems Transformation Pathway - all students in the incoming cohort joining UWC Atlantic in August 2025 are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Our partnership with the International Baccalaureate allows students in the Systems Transformation Pathway to graduate with the full IB Diploma and all the benefits of a globally recognized credential.
Although the program is still taking shape, it is being designed to prepare graduates for lifelong impact in service of the UWC mission. The cohort will learn to organise at the scale of the problem and build bridges across difference, but also to show up the work of systems transformation with valuable skills and insights from their experiences intervening in systems.

Following the successful launch and first year of the Systems Transformation Pathway at UWC Atlantic, the International Baccalaureate is welcoming a small number of selected schools to also design and launch Systems Transformation pilots as part of the IB's 16+ review.
In 2022/23, a group of UWC Atlantic students worked with the course designers - VP Learning Innovation Marija Uzunova Dang and IB senior curriculum manager Jennifer Gillett - providing feedback and helping shape key elements of the course.
