Western States Chemistry Education Group

The Western States Chemistry Education Group (WSCEG) is an affiliation of faculty from 2-year, 4-year and Ph.D. granting institutions with a shared interest in best practices in chemistry education and the development and training of graduate students. The WSCEG was formed in 2014 by Deborah Exton and Tom Greenbowe (University of Oregon) and Charles Atwood (University of Utah).

Currently the group has over 120 members from over 40 institutions.

The WSCEG holds 2-day annual meetings that alternate between the Rocky Mountain states and the Pacific coastal states, see Annual Meetings page for a list of past and upcoming events. Meetings revolve around talks, poster sessions, and social events with the goals of building a community of instructors, sharing of ideas for practice, and establishing collaborations.

The group maintains a listserv that allows members to query the group and/or share resources as desired.

WSCEG members also mobilize to support collaborative efforts. Most recently, members utilized the listserv to share resources and suggestions for moving to remote laboratory instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, more than 20 members came together to develop a set of open-ended survey items regarding the impacts of the pandemic on students. This survey was distributed across institutions to inform instructors.
