Meeting View/Layout Options

Speaker and Gallery Views

Zoom has two general view options when you are in a class/meeting:

  • Speaker View: The video of whoever is speaking occupies the majority of the Zoom window. The rest of the participant videos are shown in small thumbnails horizontally above it.

  • Gallery View: Participant videos are shown in tiles. Whoever is speaking will have a yellow border around their video. Up to 25 videos can be shown at a time, and an arrow will appear that you can click on if you want to see the rest of the participants.

You can switch between the Speaker and Gallery views by clicking on the tile or Speaker View icon near the top right of the Zoom window.

View Options During Screen Share

Default view when someone shares their screen

Zoom usually defaults to the view shown on the left in Full Screen mode (click ESC to exit). The shared-screen content takes up most of the screen, and participants are in small boxes at the top.

This view is great to carefully read the shared content. However, presenters often use shared content as a starting point for discussion and stay on that item long after you've read it.

In such cases, we recommend swapping the location of shared screen and speaker video, or enabling Side-by-side Mode, as shown below.

Swap location of shared screen and speaker video

If you want to see the video of the class or speaker in a larger area while a screen is shared, you can click on the Swap shared screen with video icon to the left of the full screen icon, located to the right of the list of videos at the top. You can click on the same icon, or click on Switch to Sharing Content, to go back to original view.

Enable to Side-by-side Mode

When someone shares their screen, a green message bar will appear. To the right of it, you'll see View Options. Click on it and then on Side-by-side Mode to allow you to resize the content windows on your screen as seen below.

Resize Content Areas in Side-by-side Mode

In this view all participants are shifted to the right, and you now have the ability to resize your screen's content by dragging the gray bar towards the left as seen here. This gray bar will become visible when you mouse over the area between the participants list and the shared-screen content. You can adjust back-and-forth to your preference.

When a new item that you want to see larger is shared by the presenter, you can return to the default by clicking on View Options and then on Side-by-side Mode again, or (more easily), by simply pulling the gray bar back to the right.
