iSchool Canvas Templates
The Learning Technologies Team has created new Canvas templates to fit with the new Canvas User Interface and based on student and faculty feedback. Using these new templates will help create consistency among iSchool Canvas courses, which will help students more easily navigate course content.

Template Instructions
Import a template
Download one of the templates above to your computer.
Go to your Canvas course > Settings > Import > Import Content into this Course.
Select Canvas Course Export Package and choose the .imscc (template) file that you had previously downloaded.
Choose to import all content, and then click on Import.
Start Module list at 0 (Module Template only)
Import the Module Template.
On your Canvas course home page, click Choose Home Page.
The radio button for Pages Front Page should be selected. Click Change to the right of the dialog box.
Locate the Home Page - Module 0 page in the list of pages. Click the menu to the right and select Use as Front Page.
Return to the Canvas home page.

Accessibility Within a Canvas Course
Ally Accessibility Tools to improve accessibility of course content (primarily course documents that have been uploaded, such as PDFs, Word docs, and PPTs) and provide students with accessible alternative formats. Includes the Ally Accessibility Report located in the left course navigation.
Accessibility Checker in the new RCE. Tool that checks common accessibility errors within the editor (available winter 2021)
UDOIT Cloud: This tool scans your Canvas course web pages, generates a report of accessibility issues and is located in the left course navigation. It also provides you with ways to fix errors that it has identified. Please refer to the CidiLabs user guide created by Clemson University for more information and tutorials.
Clean-up Canvas Pages and Files
TidyUp: provides a quick way to view all of the files and content in your course and clean out anything that is no longer needed. Please refer to the CidiLabs user guide for more information and tutorials.
Alternative to Canvas Discussions (Pilot: LIS courses only)
Harmonize Discussions (will require some training for both instructors and students). Harmonize, a multimedia rich tool that also includes a real-time chat client, is a new discussion board option in Canvas. Please refer to the Harmonize Resource Center for more information and case studies.

Course Schedule or Module list, depending on which template you choose, is now the home page instead of the Syllabus

Syllabus is set to public, so students can view it from MyPlan as they are registering for classes
Syllabus now has links to Student Resources and the updated Academic Policies documents
The iSchool Standard Grading Scheme is enabled by default
Course Schedule weeks are expandable and collapsible to prevent a lot of scrolling
DesignPLUS is Canvas add-on that makes editing and updating pages easier, and its features are built-in to the templates. You need to go through a quick 30-minute training to be given access to Design Tools. To schedule a training, please email olt@uw.edu.
