Reuniting UW students with their belongings
The HuskyFind is a central lost-and-found website for the entire UW community. The HuskyFind uses searchable item postings, secure message posting to help both students and employees locate their missing items quickly. Additionally, it has an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that protects user's privacy.
Each and every day, students at the University of Washington will misplace some type of item that is valuable or important for their academic pursuits; whether it be a laptop, an AirPod, a water bottle, ID card, or key. A majority of these lost items are ultimately returned by the university's lost-and-found services. Unfortunately, there is little guidance available for students looking for their missing property. The university has a number of lost-and-found service locations throughout its campuses and properties.
Maya is a University of Washington (UW) Student that generally has many things that are very important to her like her Husky Card, Laptop and AirPods. Most of the time when Maya loses something, she has no idea what office or building to go to in order to find out where to turn in the item she lost.
David works on the Front Desk for his job and he receives lost items from students almost daily. David's work would be much easier if there was a central place to put all of the lost items and if it was easy for him to connect those items with their rightful owner.
To better understand the problem, we interviewed five UW students about their experiences with lost items on campus.
Several participants expressed frustration with the current system:
"I lost my Husky Card in Kane Hall and went to three different front desks. Nobody knew anything."
"I didn't even know UW had a lost and found."
"If there was one place to check, I would actually use it."
Participants reported that they often:
Search multiple buildings
Post in Discord servers or group chats
Use Reddit or Facebook groups
Give up after a few days
Replace items instead of continuing their search
User Issues:
Users were frustrated due to the independent operation of each facility, which made it hard to determine what buildings would be likely places for lost items.
Emotional Consequences
Students expressed frustration with being extremely stressed, anxious, and helpless upon losing valuable personal property.
Financial Effects
A lot of students said they replaced their lost items instead of looking around for them at greater expense.
This issue is bigger than just convenience. The loss of a Husky Card, keys, etc. may affect your ability to perform academically, maintain your regular routine and ultimately impact how you feel as a whole student.
Why do existing solutions fail to address it fully?
Current methods of solving this problem do not work well because there is no single resource or method that can be used by everyone at the University of Washington. There are separate lost and found areas in each UW building (lost and found desks) which are independent from one another. Additionally, social media posts about lost items get buried among other messages, so it is difficult to find what you are looking for. Lastly, there are generic lost and found apps available but they are not made with UW students in mind. Therefore, when students lose an item, they have little knowledge of where to look, spend a lot of time searching through several places, and ultimately many times just throw away whatever was lost.
Evaluation
How we tested Huskyfind and improved the design
To assess huskyfind, we looked at whether or not end-users were able to accomplish the core functions of the website: locate a missing item, post an item that has been found, and understand the process of recovering items. in order to do this, we utilized three tools: peer review/feedback, usability testing, and design critiquing to determine what was working on the site as well as what areas need to be improved.
People involved were current University of Washington (UW) students as well as peer-design teams representing prospective users of the HuskyFind platform. Each group of participants gave us feedback on the design's useability, including whether they could find their way around the design, and its functionality.
Participants were asked to complete several tasks using HuskyFind, such as:
• Searching for a missing item
• Reporting a found item
• Uploading photos of an item
• Navigating the item recovery process
• Reviewing the AI Privacy Scanning feature
• Communicating with another user using the Messaging System
users liked the clean and easy-to-navigate UI; found the Search Functionality to be easy to use; were able to easily identify the Categories; thought it was cool that there was an AI Privacy Scanning feature built-in to protect ID information and other personal documents from being accessed by unauthorized parties; enjoyed having a Centralized Platform dedicated to the UW Community.
Some Participants had difficulty understanding how users would communicate with each-other once a match was made. Other Users felt they needed clearer confirmation after submitting an Item; and wanted to have more Filtering Options and Notification Options available. Additionally, some User-Feedback suggested that the UW Privacy Protections need to be More Visible and Clearly Explained.
What we Learned
our testing demonstrated that while finding Lost Items is largely dependent upon the Search Functionality of the application recovering lost items is ultimately dependent upon Trust Communication and Privacy. As a result of participant-feedback -- we modified the Recovery Workflow Added a Messaging Feature Created Clearer Confirmation Screens and Strengthened the AI Privacy Scanning Process. these modifications enabled us to create HuskyFind to be more Intuitive Trusted and User-Centered.
Design
Design Solution
HuskyFind is an online lost-and-found (digital) solution created specifically for the university of washington community. HuskyFind allows users — including students, faculty and staff — to quickly locate their missing property using a single web-based platform. Searching, posting and communicating about lost or found items are all brought together in one easy-to-use system.
Users interact with HuskyFind via two primary pathways. Users can either search for missing items or they can post information regarding found items. Both options allow users to categorize search or posted items by type (category), and/or location, as well as access detailed information about each listed item and communicate directly with the owner of the found item (via messaging).
The key features of HuskyFind have been developed from data collected during user research and usability testing. Key features include search filtering; posting an item; uploading photos; tagging buildings where an item was located; messaging capabilities; privacy scanning utilizing artificial intelligence technology; and updating the status of an item.
HuskyFind reduces confusion, saves time, and increases the likelihood that lost property will be returned to its rightful owner by creating a single source where members of the University of Washington community can search for lost items, post their own lost or found items, and potentially recover lost items. By reducing confusion and saving time, HuskyFind also makes it easier to locate missing property.
Learning and Reflection
The primary takeaway from this project is that good design is developed by understanding who will be using it (the end-user), rather than just focusing on developing solutions. This can be done through both user research and user testing; ultimately resulting in better products that are able to meet the needs of users.
For example, our research and testing revealed that users were concerned about their privacy when entering information into a lost item search engine, they wanted clear instructions to help them recover their lost item, and they preferred direct communication with others who may have found their lost item.
We faced one major challenge during the development of our prototype; narrowing down what feature set we should include. As designers, we generate numerous creative ideas at times; however, we need to identify those that will provide the greatest amount of utility to users in terms of functionally while minimizing complexity.
Initially, our main focus was creating a platform where people could post lost items and then search for said posts. However, after conducting initial rounds of user testing we realized there were many other issues that arose regarding finding lost items. Examples of some of these issues included being unable to message someone directly once you've found something, protecting users' private information (i.e., home address), and providing clear directions on how to retrieve a lost item. These new findings resulted in us implementing multiple design changes throughout the project.
If we were given additional time to work on this project, we would like to conduct even more usability testing on different types of devices, make our product accessible to all users (users with disabilities), implement real-time notifications when users input their lost or missing items into the system, and look into partnering with university lost-and-found services.
This project has shown me that designing products for humans involves much iteration. In order to create effective designs, you must continue to test your ideas, gather feedback from your target audience, and continually improve upon your designs based on actual user needs rather than hypothetical ones.
Limitations and Differences
In order for huskyfind to be successful in locating missing property at u-w, there needs to be active participation from students and faculty in finding their lost items. With limited participation in reporting lost items, the potential success of the program will likely decrease. Users of huskyfind need to have a cell phone or other internet capable device and need to be familiar with how to use online technology. Our initial prototype of huskyfind has been tested by a very small group of individuals; therefore, this version may not represent the full needs of all members of the university of washington.
When developing huskyfind, we identified the most important functions needed (searching for lost items, posting information about lost items, sending messages back and forth between parties involved, and protecting users' privacy) and did not include some of the more advanced technologies we could have included (GPS location devices and an artificial intelligence "item-matching" service). By focusing on what were considered the minimum amount of features required to make a basic application useful to students at the university and staying within the limitations provided by the project parameters, we created an application that is both simple and functional.
If we had sufficient time to develop huskyfind further, we would like to implement many additional features into the final version including real-time notification when someone posts a message related to your lost item, an artificial intelligence-based "item-matching" function which can automatically identify potentially matched items based on characteristics described by each party, improve accessibility by making it possible for users to report lost items via computer rather than just mobile device, provide linkages to officially designated lost-and-found services at the university and perform additional usability testing to enhance the overall user experience.
