De-Escalation Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: Tips and Strategies to minimize conflict

De-escalation is the skill of reducing the intensity of a conflict or a potentially violent interaction. These types of situations, that can quickly escalate, are becoming more frequent and more common in libraries due to the pandemic. Patrons who are experiencing loss of varying degrees and dealing with ambiguity, stress, fear and anger are likely to express these frustrations with library staff. In this training library staff can learn how to respond to patron behavior in ways that will help keep everyone safe.

This training will be recorded and linked on this website.

"generous accountability" Watch & Discuss

Earlier this year, educator and activist McKensie Mack presented “Shifting the Center: Transforming Academic Libraries through Generous Accountability,” the 2020 ACRL President's Program. In our “Watch & Discuss” event, we will explore themes from Mack’s talk and reflect on how we can apply them in our work.

Participants will watch the 90-minute talk before our event on November 20th: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2pnoUcF_o4

The event will be moderated by Wendy Holliday (Weber State University) and will use the following format:

  • Welcome

  • Opening remarks (Wendy Holliday)

  • Small group discussions in Zoom breakout rooms (25-30 minutes)

  • Large group facilitated discussion (10-15 minutes)

As it is primarily a space for discussion and reflection, this event will not be recorded. Community Agreements and Discussion Questions are provided in advance via the link below.
