The Concept of active aging is “Optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance the quality of life as people age” by the World Health Organization. People after retirement tend to seek social interaction and community to enhance stay active in the society, but Malaysia is lacking public community space provision for this group of people. Aging well lifestyle should continue social interaction and intellectual engagement to stay active in life. There are now more people over the age of 65 than there are under the age of five (source: World Economic Forum 2019) We Malaysian are not prepared for life after aging. Elderly that is at the age of retirement often stay at home and most of the reason is there is nowhere to go as there is no public place that is favorable for them to stay and spend their leisure time.
The adult children nowadays couldn’t always take care of their parents due to the working society nowadays that often spent most of their time in their work. Most of them decide to send their elderly parent to the senior care center to ease their burden. The issue of this private sector of the senior center is that , the building is not designed to mean for the elderly, most of the centers just simply converted from a conventional shop lot or bungalow mainly for business purposes. The elderly may feel unpleasant or keep to themselves to ease the burden of their children. It can cause serious problems to their well-being mentally and physically.
Malaysia is still lacking initiation to create a better and healthier society for aging people. Hence, the purpose of this study is to take the initiation to discover the need for space and environment for the elderly, provide a public place that is favorable to the elderly to enhance their lifestyle quality, and increase public awareness of elderly needs and potential social impact of this intelligence group that can bring to the society.
