The total cost of this project to the Big Spring Master Gardener Association (BSMGA) for 2013 was $637.00.
However, due to in-kind donations, and private cash donations, the Cemetery received a total of $4,137.07 for this project in 2013. What an accomplishment!
The Big Spring Master Gardener Association partnered with Tusculum College to coordinate the Echoes of Emancipation conference October 45, 2013, recognizing the 150th anniversary of Andrew Johnson freeing his slaves on August 8, 1863. A panel was assembled to discuss the topic of African American cemetery restorations and included a trip to view New Hope Cemetery.
2013 brought a year of renewal at the Cemetery:
Meetings with the people that have watched the transition of the gardens and listening to their words of appreciation, collecting stories and photos of the people buried there, and the addition of a New Hope Community exhibit at the Nathanael Green Museum.
Two videos were also filmed during 2013:
The University of Tennessee Agriculture Communications Department ran a feature story statewide on the growth of the Cemetery since the last filming two years ago. This later aired on RFD TV.
A local Knoxville News station also ran a story highlighting the rich heritage and history of the project.
