The department of Biostatistics and Data Science at UTHealth had the privilege to invite Dr. Hadley Wickham for a talk on Friday January 10th, 2020.
Dr. Wickham is a Chief Scientist at R Studio and an adjunct professor of Statistics at the University of Auckland, Stanford University and Rice University. The topic of his talk was entitled "My fourteen years fight with data reshaping". Dr. Wickham introduced the "reshape" package which first appeared on CRAN in 2005, as well all the challenges encountered while developing the latest versions of that package. He also disputed the use of "reshape-reshape2-tidyr" as a lens to think about the co-evolution of data structures and codes, managing change, interface design, and the intertwined nature of R as a programming language and environment for interactive data analysis. Faculty and students were able to interact with Dr. Wickham after his presentation, by asking many great questions. At the end of the talk, a group meeting with sixteen students occured in a classroom. Some of these students were lucky enough to learn some new skills and program in R with Dr. Wickham by their side! It was a big event which had over 100 participants from all the six UTHealth schools and from other institutions. Thank you to all the participants and volunteers who made this conference memorable by their presence and efforts.
