Andrea KH Stavoe, PhD

I received my BS in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology/Biotechnology and BA in French from Michigan State University in 2008 . I earned my MPhil (2010) and PhD (2015) degrees in Cell Biology from Yale University in the lab of Dr. Daniel Colón-Ramos, studying the molecular mechanisms of presynaptic assembly in C. elegans. I was a postdoctoral trainee with Dr. Erika Holzbaur, investigating the dynamics of neuronal autophagy during aging in primary murine neurons (2015–2020, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania). I became an Assistant Professor in September, 2020 in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth (University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston).

We aim to foster an encouraging, respectful, and productive environment so that our trainees can generate exciting and meaningful scientific contributions to the field and successfully launch into the next stage of their careers.

Graduate and postdoctoral trainees learn many broadly applicable skills during their training. Trainees learn about effective science communication through presentations at lab meetings, journal clubs, and local seminars. Trainees are also encouraged to present their research at national and international meetings. Mentorship and training in written scientific communication are also emphasized to ensure clear and effective grant and manuscript preparation.
