About TWIMS 2023

The Texas Women in Math Symposium (TWIMS) is a weekend conference for Texas mathematicians that takes place at a different institution in Texas each year. TWIMS 2023 will take place in person at The University of Texas at Austin on March 4-5 2023. 

The ongoing goal of this conference series is to strengthen the network of women, gender minorities, and allies in Texas working in mathematics by highlighting the research and accomplishments of several outstanding late career women mathematicians, as well as providing an opportunity for early career mathematicians to present their work and build a professional network. 

TWIMS 2023 will feature two plenary lectures: The first plenary lecture will be given by Dr. Anne J. Shiu, a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University. Her research interests include algebraic, geometric, and combinatorial approaches to mathematical biology, biochemical dynamical systems, neural coding, parameter identifiability, algebraic statistics, and genomics. The second plenary lecture will be given by Dr. Rebecca Garcia, a professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Sam Houston State University and a Co-Director for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program (MSRI UP). Her research interests are in algebraic combinatorics, computational commutative algebra, and computational algebraic geometry.

In honor of the event’s fifth iteration, there will be a virtual keynote lecture given by Dr. Karen Uhlenbeck, who is a professor emeritus of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, where she held the Sid W. Richardson Foundation Regents Chair. She is currently a distinguished visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study and a visiting senior research scholar at Princeton University. She is also the first, and currently only, woman to win the Abel Prize. 

TWIMS 2023 is a conference in cooperation with Association for Women in Mathematics and supports the Welcoming Environment Statement of AWM.

Registration for TWIMS 2023 is now closed. 

Registration deadlines were February 1 (to give a talk) and February 15 (to attend).

COVID-19 Policies

UT has aligned its masking guidance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People may choose to mask at any time, for any reason, and individuals who are immunocompromised or at high risk should continue to take precautions.

Masks are available for students who need one at the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center and Texas Union hospitality desks.
