Virtual Interprofessional Simulation on SDOH

Health and Well-Being for All

Adapted with permission from the CDC Foundation

"Health and Well-Being for All" is a small group discussion activity initially designed by the CDC Foundation as an in-person experience for medical students completing an applied epidemiology fellowship. With permission, The University of Texas at Austin Center for Health IPE made significant adaptions to build a 3-hour experience with the following elements: 1) simulation of a community task force meeting, 2) application of the 6-step change process resulting in an action plan, 3) development of a facilitator role that emphasizes best practice for small group, interprofessional facilitation, 4) a climate supportive of interprofessional learning, and 5) best practices for virtual learning.

This simulation focuses on addressing rising obesity in a community. Learners simulate a community task force meeting to address this health priority. Through this simulation, they apply a 6-step improvement process to develop an action plan as a team.  Advanced learners are trained to facilitate the 3-hour simulation. Participants consists of students from various health professions programs from UT, Austin Community College, and beyond.  Other past particpants include medical resident, faculty, practitioners, and community members.

Faculty and staff from partnering programs support simulation day, serving as mentors and observers of the experience. They provide feedback to participants and student facilitators.
