School Nurse and School Physician

School Nurse and School Physician in Swedish School Health Care
All students in the Helsingborg city schools have access to a school nurse and school physician. The school nurse and school physician provide advice and support for students to develop and achieve their school goals while maintaining or improving their well-being.
The school nurse´s main focus is to promote health and prevent ill health by offering conversations about student health, offering regular health visits, empowering students to make healthy choices and offering students vaccinations according to the Swedish national vaccination programme.
All contacts with student health services are voluntary and are based on close collaboration between the student, school health care staff and guardians who work together to promote students' health.
All students have a digital school health record that follows the student while going to school.
The school nurse and school physician work under duty of confidentiality.

Health Visit
The school nurse meets all PYP1 students with their guardians. Other school nurse visits take place when the students attend Swedish school years 2 (PYP3), 4 (PYP5), 7 (MYP2) in primary school and in year 1 in upper secondary education (MYP5). The health visits include screenings related to growth, eyesight and hearing.

Vaccinations by the School Nurse
The school nurse offers vaccinations according to the Swedish national vaccination programme, as a continuation from the Child health center (Barnavårdscentral, BVC).
PYP3- offer of vaccination against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR).

PYP6- offer of vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

MYP3- offer of vaccination against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping cough (DTP).

The school nurse also offers additional vaccinations for students recently arrived in Sweden.

School Physician
The school physician works collaboratively with the school nurse. The school physician is the student's medical representative in school. When needed, the school physician carries out planned health checks in connection with school-related ill health.

Work Environment
The school nurse and the school physician are an important part of the work with the school’s work environment. School nurses provide advice and support to students, staff and school management regarding health-related problems.

Health Education
The school nurse informs students about healthy habits, shows the connection between how we live and how we feel, and supports the student to manage self-care.

Special Needs Teachers

At ISH, there is an inclusive approach to education. All students have access to support to remove or reduce barriers so that each student can fully participate in and develop to reach their educational goals. Each section of the school has a Student Welfare Team (SWT) which meets regularly and consists of the programme principal, school psychologist, school counsellor (PYP, MYP & DP), career guidance counsellor (MYP & DP), school nurse (PYP, MYP & DP) and the special needs teacher(s).

There are special needs teachers in each section of the school, Pre-EY/EY, PYP, MYP1-4 and MYP5/DP. They contribute to the development of the pedagogical work so that the needs of all students are met. They give guidance to teachers, supporting them with completing pedagogical mappings, investigating the needs of the students, deciding upon access accommodations, creating and updating individual development plans (IDPs) and action plans (åtgärdsprogram). The special needs teachers in each programme also support the class and student assistants along with the class or subject teachers.
