UDOT’s internal designers do not get many opportunities to work on large interchange and structure projects since that work usually goes to consultant firms with sizable highly specialized design teams.
Furthermore, consultant designers are usually less familiar with a region’s routes and projects than internal designers. This is an even greater challenge when a project, such as the Mountain View Corridor, spans multiple regions.
Recognizing an opportunity to elevate the skills of its internal design team and at the same time provide consultants with the situational awareness of internal designers, UDOT embraced an innovative approach. Oanh Le-Spradlin (Project Manager for Mountain View Corridor), Region Two Leadership, and Design, implemented a strategy where in-house design staff from Regions One, Two, and Three partnered with experienced consultants on preconstruction and design of the Mountain View Corridor project.
This approach fostered a rich environment for collaboration and knowledge exchange. UDOT designers gained practical experience and enhanced their abilities in this type of work, while consultants developed a deeper understanding of UDOT's internal design processes and the unique context of the project, ensuring the new corridor seamlessly integrates with the existing transportation network across the regions.
Previously region design squads would rarely interact. Now, three UDOT regions and seven consultant companies have shown that collaborating, and pooling their skills and understanding make for high-quality design.
