Dear Students, Parents, and Band Directors,
The University of Tennessee at Martin Department of Music is proud to announce the 47th Annual Honor Band Festival! We are excited to welcome over 350 students to our beautiful campus for two days of music learning and performing! This year’s festival will be held Thursday, January 22 through Saturday, January 24, 2026.
The UTM Honor Band has provided generations of the top student musicians from programs in the mid-South the opportunity to work together with fantastic guest conductors. During their time on campus, students engage with high quality and challenging literature, learn new skills, enrich their musical experiences, and produce artistic and exciting performances. We are thrilled that you are interested in becoming part of this rich and successful history.
Please read all the information below, including the material regarding protocols for managing the pandemic.
Application Process – Dynamic Forms
The form process will be the same as previous years. Returning directors and students: the process is the same as last year. Anyone who fills out an application (director or student) will need to create an account first. This process is free and simple. Please follow the steps below:
1. Click the link to the Application Form
2. Create a new account – need an email address
3. Follow the prompts, log in, complete, and submit the form
4. Directors can still submit applications for all their students (if that is what you have done in the past). This may be the easiest option.
Once the application is submitted, two emails will be generated – one to the parent/guardian with a link to a publicity release form and one to the director with a link to a short recommendation form, which will also be submitted electronically. Directors and parents will need to scroll through the form to their page. Directors: your recommendation information will not be visible to students and parents. The deadline to submit applications by will be Friday, December 5, 2025 at midnight.
Director Recommendations & Student Rankings
Students should be ranked in order by directors (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) on the Director Recommendation. It is important to the entire process that students be ranked in sequential order, i.e. only one student per number. In past years, several schools have ranked all of their students as number one. We do our best to take every school's number one choice but cannot guarantee that in all situations. Ranking every one of your students as number one is unfair to the application process and to potentially more qualified students from other schools. Directors will who rank all students as number one will be asked to re-rank their students or risk having their students not accepted.
Preparation
Directors: please be sure your accepted students are prepared on their repertoire before attending the festival. Doing so helps them, the rest of the musicians and guest conductors to have the most positive and musical experience possible. We have experienced issues in recent years with students attending the festival who were unprepared or otherwise not ready for the experience. We ask your cooperation and assistance in this process from application through performance in order to ensure success for all students.
Communication
All communication for the festival, including, but not limited to, notification of acceptance, login and password information, audition times and final information will be sent to directors. Please relay this information to your students, band parents, and school administration.
Ensembles
Please see below for a listing and description of each the festival’s ensembles and audition requirements.
Audition Process
While students will audition on parts again this year, all pieces from each ensembles program will not be included. Students should start by preparing the entirety of their default ensemble’s repertoire (9-10 Concert Band; 11-12 Symphonic Band). Students who intend to audition for the Wind Ensemble should prepare that repertoire in addition to their default ensemble’s repertoire. Again, the number of pieces included in each ensemble’s audition material has been lowered, making this relatively low impact for those students.
The primary reason for this audition process is to increase the amount of individual preparation and decrease the amount of sight-reading, thereby increasing the overall educational and performance outcomes of the festival. Audition excerpts will be posted outside the audition rooms on Jan. 25th. Please read all of the descriptions below for complete details as some audition procedures have changed.
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble will consist of students in 9th through 12th grades. Once students are accepted to the festival, they will receive an email with a link to password protected copies of the first parts of the ensemble’s repertoire that will serve as the audition materials. Students should start by preparing the entirety of their default ensemble’s repertoire (9-10 Concert Band; 11-12 Symphonic Band). Students who intend to audition for Wind Ensemble should prepare that repertoire in addition to their default ensemble’s repertoire. Again, the number of pieces included in each ensemble’s audition material has been lowered, making this relatively low impact. The number of pieces will be limited for each ensemble. Students who audition for the Wind Ensemble and are not accepted will be placed in a seat appropriate to their ability in their default ensemble. If there are not enough students who audition for the Wind Ensemble, students will be pulled from the top of the Symphonic Band’s roster.
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band will consist of high school students in 11th and 12th grade only. Once students are accepted to the festival, they will receive an email with a link to password protected copies of the first parts of the ensemble’s repertoire that will serve as the audition materials. Important: 11th and 12th grade students may choose to audition for the Wind Ensemble by preparing its repertoire, in addition to the Symphonic Band’s, for their placement audition.
Concert Band
The Concert Band will consist of high school students in 9th and 10th grade only. Once students are accepted to the festival, they will receive an email with a link to password protected copies of the first parts of the ensemble’s repertoire that will serve as the audition materials. Important: 9th and 10th grade students may choose to audition for the Wind Ensemble by preparing its repertoire, in addition to the Concert Band’s, for their placement audition.
Middle School
The Middle School Honor Band will consist of students in 7th and 8th grade only. There will be no 9th graders in the Middle School Honor Band. Once students are accepted to the festival, they will receive an email with a link to password protected copies of the ensemble’s repertoire that will serve as the audition materials.
Repertoire
The repertoire for each ensemble will serve as the prepared material for chair placement auditions. PDFs of parts will be posted on the UT Martin Department of Music Website and only accessible to musicians via a password protected login. This information will be sent to Directors. For students who apply on their own, please contact your director for this information.
Placement/Seating Auditions
We ask directors to be sure their students are able to successfully perform the repertoire for the ensemble for which they are auditioning. Percussionists should be able to read treble and percussion clefs and be competent to perform on all instruments required by the repertoire. While we would love to accept all of your students into the festival, not all are at the point in their development where they can be successful in an event like this. We are relying on you to provide accurate references and vet your students to avoid putting students, festival staff, and guest conductors in difficult situations.
Audition Materials
· First parts of the repertoire for each student’s band will serve as the source for the audition excerpts. Students should prepare all parts to the best of their ability.
Scales
· Middle School – 2 major scales (up to three sharps/flats) & Chromatic Scale (Bb-Bb)
· HS – 2 Major Scales (up to 5 sharps/flats) & Chromatic Scale (Bb-Bb)
Percussionists
· Plan to play 2 major scales on marimba
· 2 of the standard PAS rudiments (slow-fast-slow) in addition to the excerpts from the repertoire.
o A rudiment sheet will be provided with the percussion materials on the Honor Band website.

4. Students invited to audition on campus will be required to supply a piano accompaniment (if applicable) to Dr. Oelrich by Friday, January 16, 2025.

This competition and award is restricted to graduating seniors who wish to pursue a music degree at the UT Martin beginning in the Fall of 2025. Please see the schedule for audition times. To apply for the competition, students must do the following:
1. Indicate their intent to audition on their application.
2. Upload a video audition of the intended audition piece and send the web link to Dr. Oelrich (joelrich@utm.edu) for screening purposes. Deadline for video submission is Friday, January 10, 2025. No more than 10 students will accepted for the on campus auditions. Non-acceptance into the on-campus solo competition will not effect participation in the honor band.
3. Students receiving an invitation to audition on campus will be notified by Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
4. Students invited to audition on campus will be required to supply a piano accompaniment (if applicable) to Dr. Oelrich by Friday, January 17, 2025.
5. Auditions will take place Friday of the Honor Band from 10:00-11:30 am.
6. Repertoire should be congruent with the musical quality and difficulty of a music department entrance audition.
Parking
Visitors passes are available in the Music Office, FA 108. We have been assured by campus police that no tickets will be issued to vehicles without University Parking Permits during the Festival. Try to park close to the Fine Arts or the University Center, if possible. If you do receive a ticket, please bring it to headquarters in FA 132, and we will take care of it.
Buses and Parking
If you will be arriving with a bus, please drop your students off by the entrance of the parking lot or, preferably, by the sidewalk across from the Elam Center (right next to the blocked parking lot entrance) on the northwest side of the FA parking lot. It would be best to approach the building from the south, facilitating drop-off without having to cross the street. See the campus map included.
Registration
Will be in the Main Lobby of Fine Arts. Please check in your students, get your packet, pick up the bell covers you need for your students, and proceed to the warmup room.
Warm Up Rooms
The Warm-up Room for High School students will be the Band Room – FA133. Middle School students will warm up in Blankenship Recital Hall – FA 122. Your school's packet will contain name badges for yourself and all participating students, maps, festival schedules, a list of area restaurants. Student name badges are to be worn at all times during Festival events. This is a lot of people in one space and it is important to audition as soon as possible after arriving.
Auditions
NEW: Auditions will begin at 12:00 pm to allow for instruments with large numbers of musicians to finish by 5:00 pm.
Auditions for both High School and Middle School students will take place in the Fine Arts Building. After arriving, it is very important that as soon as they are here and warmed up that they go to your audition. Waiting and practicing once they get here creates a bottleneck at the end of the audition window and that is not fair for students who must arrive late nor for our judges. Some students don’t get dinner because of this. We appreciate your help with this. A detailed list of room assignments will be in your packet. Results will be emailed to directors and be posted in several places throughout the building.
Additionally, be sure that high school students auditioning for the Wind Ensemble prepare the material for both the Wind Ensemble AND their default ensemble (Concert Band for grades 9-10, Symphonic Band for grades 11-12).
Wi-Fi
Free guest Wi-Fi service will be available. Choose the “UTM Guest” network. You will be asked to enter your email address for registration, accept the terms and you will be connected. This network will not be able to stream content.
Fees – Receipts
Receipts for fees mailed in will be in your school’s packet. See Tammy Owensby in FA 108 for other receipt needs.
Director’s Session and Rehearsal Observations
We strongly encourage all directors to participate in the Director’s Session. Additionally, all rehearsals for all of the festival bands are open. We encourage any directors, parents, etc. to spend some time observing the students and guest conductors.
Director’s Breakfast – Friday
Dr. Jeffrey Bibbee, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, is sponsoring a hot breakfast for all directors and music faculty at the UTM Alumni Center, 589 University Street, Martin, TN. There is ample parking there and it is a short walk from Fine Arts.
Hospitality Room
The Director's Hospitality Room will be in FA 170 (Green Room). Water and coffee will be available all day and light breakfast will be served in the morning until 10:00 am on Friday and Saturday. Thank you to Amro Music for sponsoring the Hospitality Room again this year.
Department of Music Auditions
If any of your students wish to schedule a UTM-Department of Music audition during the Festival, please have them sign up for a time during the initial registration on Thursday in FA 132. Sign-up sheets will be available for all instruments, including voice and piano. These auditions may serve as entrance auditions for music majors/minors and scholarship auditions for majors, minors and non-major participants only. These will take place Friday at 1:30, location arranged with applied faculty.
Instrument Storage & Considerations
Percussion - We have assembled enough percussion instruments to outfit each ensemble. Please bring sticks and mallets only.
Large Instruments – Tuba, Euphonium, Baritone & Tenor Saxophones may be left in the rehearsal spaces where they will be secured.
Flute/Piccolo – If you have a student who is interested in being considered for piccolo, please have them bring them along. The only audition requirement will be a scale of the adjudicator’s choice.
Concert Dress
Concert Dress for each ensemble will be nice dress. Please keep the choices modest and refrain from jeans and printed apparel. Look classy and professional.
Please let me know if you have any questions and we look forward to having you on campus!
